There's no doubt that Modern Warfare 2 is one of the biggest releases of the year, and Gamestop certainly feel that way as well. Tony Bartel of Gamestop said that they "expect Modern Warfare 2 could be the best selling title of all time.” But as Joystiq has noted, the game has a bit of a hurdle to climb in order to achieve that.
On the conference call following the release of GameStop's second-quarter fiscal results, Tony Bartel, EVP of Merchandising and Marketing, talked about games that would help drive the back half of the year for the industry and GameStop. He pointed to Halo: ODST, Assassin's Creed 2, and most important of all, Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
In fact, GameStop believes Modern Warfare 2 could set new records. “We expect Modern Warfare 2 could be the best selling title of all time,” Bartel said. He added later in the call that GameStop has been seeing “very strong reservations” for the Prestige edition of Modern Warfare 2, which ships with the night vision goggles. Once that edition was announced, he said that GameStop saw many customers upgrade from the base version to the premium version, “which is a very good sign.”
Overall, he noted that “anticipated price reductions for consoles will drive demand and expand the installed base for our core audience.”

Modern Warfare 2 easily has the potential to be the best selling video game ever, but the raised price tag for people in the UK is definitely going to be an issue, especially in this economy.
Gta 4 had the hype similar to halo and was multiplatform.
Wii Sports has like 44mill but that comes with the console.
So, I doubt it will beat that. Possibly the best selling current gen game (non Nintendo), but not best selling of all time.
Gran Turismo: 10 mil
FF7: 9.8 mil
Halo 3: 8.1 million
Pac man: 7 Mil
Gears of War: 5 Mil
But here's the fun part...
1. Wii Play (Wii – 22.98 million)[68]
2. Nintendogs (DS – 22.27 million, all five versions combined)[68]
3. Wii Fit (Wii – 21.82 million)[67]
4. Pokémon Red, Blue, and Green (Game Boy – 20.08 million approximately: 10.23 million in Japan,[44] 9.85 million in US)[19]
5. New Super Mario Bros. (DS – 18.45 million)[68]
6. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES – 18 million)[105]
7. Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day! (DS – 17.41 million)[68]
8. Mario Kart Wii (Wii – 17.39 million)[67]
9. Pokémon Diamond and Pearl (DS – 16.81 million)[69]
10. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (PS2 – 14.89 million shipped)[102]

Sony is the only company to crack the top ten; hell, even the top 20. Nintendo is the leader of moving products whether you like it or not. A huge top tier release for 360 or PS3 may help move consoles, but in comparison for Nintendo, it's just another month.
Gamestop suck balls. They make up BETA rumours even though it's already confirmed there's only a closed BETA.
GEARS OF WAR 2 sold 12 mill so far not 5?
