IGN.com tells us what to expect out of the next Nintendo DS handheld. They have some interesting ideas, most of which I expect to see in the Nintendo DS 2. Read on to see the rest of their ideas.
Two touch screens. This is pretty much a given -- how many people have seen players instinctively want to tap the upper screen with the stylus in the same fashion as the lower screen? Two touch screens open up potential for different styles of game designs. So does:
More sensitive touch technology. The Apple iPhone has it, the Microsoft Surface has it...the next Nintendo DS will have it. The current DS can only sense one specific location on the screen, meaning you really can't use multiple fingers or stylus at the same time with any real accuracy. A filed Nintendo patent showed a Star Fox game design using two fingers on a touch screen to guide an Arwing around in a 3D environment, and the current DS screen technology just doesn't have the capacity to handle this idea. But start fresh with a new Nintendo DS system with updated touch technology and you'll be able to pinch and stretch, as well as draw with multiple brushes at the same time. Imagine the next Wario Ware using a more versatile and more sensitive touch screen.

However, I don't think they will be introducing a new handheld anytime in the next two years. DS is insanely popular, even more so in Japan, and all the major developers are pushing games for the system. They have no reason to update yet.
However, things like the built-in camera and the accelerometer aren't needed. I don't want to take pictures with my DS, and I certainly don't want to be waving it around like the Wii remote. (think of all the broken DS's)
IGN does have some interesting ideas though. The SD card idea is genius. That way, we could download VC games from the Wii, put them on the SD card, and play them on the DS 2. SD cards could also be used for pictures, movies, songs, and other content.
Basically, add most of these ideas and get rid of the GBA slot. (who plays GBA games anymore?)
Although I do agree the slot should be removed. I have plenty of things to play GBA games on (GBA, Gameboy Player, DS), so the space could be put to much better use.
Also, am I the only one who would love to see a good analog stick on DS 2? Is it really too much to ask, especially with a folding system to protect it.
