Microsoft have defended the Xbox 360 hardware issues after Game Informer's recent survey found a staggering 54.6% failure rate for the 360 amongst its 5000 participants. However, Microsoft have responded by saying that they are constantly striving to improve the 360's performance.

"Microsoft stands behind the Xbox 360 as a superior entertainment console with one of the best warranties in the industry," TG Daily was told by a Microosft spokesperson. "We are constantly improving the design, manufacture and performance of the console through extensive testing of potential sources of any problems. Xbox 360 is pleased to maintain the title of 'most played console' and the vast majority of Xbox 360 customers have enjoyed a terrific gaming and entertainment experience since their first day, and continue to, day in and day out."

The controversial survey was conducted by Game Informer and polled approximately 5,000 readers to obtain the above-mentioned data. The study also indicated significantly lower failure rates for the Playstation 3 and Wii, which were pegged at 10.6 and 6.8 percent, respectively.

Unsurprisingly, the "red ring of death" survey sparked a heated debate on TG Daily, with many readers doubting the poll's accuracy.

With all due respect to Game Informer I honesly dont think its close to that range. If they were fixing or replacing 55% of their consoles theyd be in some pretty bad finacial shape.

I remember Microsoft putting a hefty sum into extending the warranty program, I want to say half billion but that sounds WAY too much.

The problem with any numbers that Microsoft can give is that people repair their 360s by there selves; the kit sells for about $10 and is MUCH cheaper than sending it to Microsoft when it's out of warranty. That and some people just would rather buy a new console than send it in.

5000 isnt enough compared to the millions of consoles there are out there for each console.

it isnt 54%, its more around 30. 5000 isnt even 1% of the total 360s that are out there.
