Popular Science: PS3 to outsell other next-gen consoles by 2010

According to the July 2007 issue of Popular Science magazine, the PS3 stands to beat the Xbox 360 and Wii in sales by 2010. I would love to agree, but given the current state of PS3 sales who knows. I guess I can see this happening if the PS3 has a 10 year life cycle, but 2010 is only 2 and a half years away now...

This month's issue of "Popular Science" - the credible source of all things scientific - predicts that the PlayStation 3 will outsell both the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii by 2010. How? The magazine explains this off as due to the PlayStation 2's current trend in outselling all the next-gen consoles, as we can see in the scan of the "Popular Magazine" page below. How true can this be? This is after all the credible source of all things scientific. It's your call to believe in this prediction or not.

    At the end of 2007 PS3 would be selling like mad.

    Most people would buy it then because of games like GTA and MGS!

    You cannot just base any current-gen sale predictions on past results and trends. Do they think Sony's console pattern of success will last forever or something?

    I doubt this will happen. The PS3 doesn't seem to be all that popular, and by 2010, there may already be another system on the way.

    What Popular Science doesn't realize is that the PS2 and PS3 are two very different machines with two very different lives. The PS2 won the last console wars because of the sheer number of exclusive games found on the system, which PS3 is currently struggling to maintain. PS2 had a much broader target audience with it library size, with everyone from my kid cousin to hardcore gamer buying the system, while PS3's price and content is almost all dedicated to the hardcore.

    Sony adopted Microsoft's Xbox strategy for PS3, out computer the competition, and is suffering for it.

      Actually there not difference, there both the same console only diffrerence is power, cell, and most of all less games. Its pretty much a upgrade version of ps2. A better system at that, but i dont know if popular science is credible anyway

    As I've always said. It's to early to determine who will outsell who.

    Plus they base it off the PS2 sales. Yes it may be quite possible that the PS3 does the same. But at this point of time you can officially determine that.

    It would be a little to late by then, we would probably be seeing a next-gen for that time possibly being announced.

      Um they already said its a 10 year console there wont be another sony system for a long long time, do you know how much they spent on making this system, apparently not, with a statement like that.

    It's still to early to decide who will win the console war. We just need to wait and see really. I think the PS3 will be selling much better in 2008 though, the PS3 just needs some time, that's all.

    I don't know about this right now the ps3 isn't doing so well but maybe in 2 and a half more years it will finally win ahead but I'm not sure....maybe

    Is it just me, or does 2010 seem like an appropriate time to release the PS4, the next Xbox system, and a new Nintendo system ? By then, PS3 sales shouldn't really matter.

      There is not a ps4 its a rumor and will not happen for 10 years. Its been stated by sony like millions of times.

    I think new systems would certainly be on the horizon in 2010, maybe a year or so away from release of said systems.

    As for sales, they would be the same as looking back at last gens. sales. Basically, PS is predicting that PS3 will win this gen. of consoles.
