Major Final Fantasy produces, Square Enix are stating that they are not happy what-so-ever with the complexity of the Playstation 3 or Xbox 360. Square Enix are currently working hard on a new Dragon Quest game, exclusive to the Nintendo DS handheld system. They are saying both the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, and I quote, "are over-engineered" and have "too many specs." I personally disagree, specs are good, specs are great! Either way, what will this mean for the later release of popular games such as Dragon Quest, or Final Fantasy on Sony or Microsoft? Opinions better change fast, I'm not buying a Wii solely for a Final Fantasy game.

"The Chief executive for Square Enix Yoichi Wada has stated that the Xbox 360 and PS3 are too complex.

The news comes as Square Enix is working hard on a new Dragon Quest game which will be an exclusive for the Nintendo DS platform. The report continued by stating that Square Enix believes the Nintendo Wii is the ideal platform for their future games.

The quote which is going to get the most attention here is that Wada believed that the PS3 and Xbox 360 are "over-engineered" and have "too many specs."

Wada stated that in a year or two they could do better but for now it is too much to ask consumers to have a broadband internet connection, high-definition TV, etc.

Development costs are causing developers such as Square Enix to go to a simpler platform due to a new user base.

He stated that "In the old days, we could just focus on the PlayStation or (Nintendo) GameBoy, but the environment has changed completely."

The announcement of Dragon Quest being exclusive to the Nintendo DS is a sign of the future for Square Enix as the franchise has been exclusive to the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 in the past.

Wada believes the casual gaming market is leading the way to a whole new group of gamers."

I hope this doesn't delay or alter any releases for new Final Fantasy games for the ps3. :-(

I loved the original FF on the NES, so if the next one turns out to be on the Wii, then that's another reason I'll be getting one.

Ugh. My opinion, stop complaining and get to work, Squeenix. Just learn the 'complexities' of the consoles, especially Sony's, because they need you to help survive this console war.

First we find out that Square Enix has moved their Dragon Quest series over to the DS. Then we hear rumors that Square Enix has moved the Kingdom Hearts Series to the Wii. Now we hear rumors of Final Fantasy coming to the Wii.

How much has Nintendo paid you, Square Enix?

Boo-friggin'-hoo. Game development is getting too hard and we don't wanna work too much for it...well what's stopping them from working on a PS2 version?

Square Enix will develop for whichever system will get them the most money. Right now, that is on the Nintendo systems, with lower development and production costs and there incredible momentum and ever expanding user base in the market right now.

It's easy for those without any programming, modeling, game dev experience to make certain comments...it kind of sucks though when specs are all of a sudden a lot more drastic than what's been standard in the industry. Playstation to Playstation 2 development didn't have many drastic changes whereas PS2 -> PS3 does. This can increase development time and costs as they need to learn how to use the newer technology.

They might have to "learn" it, though. Other wise it's off to the Wii for SE. Either way, SE makes great games so I could care less what platform it's on.

If to hard for those certain people it would probably be best to hire people that can actually understand it's "complexity" either that or just stop for a bit and take the time to learn what they are about.

Personally, I want them to make Windows and Linux versions of FF games since the best gaming experience and graphics have always and will always be on a computer; but I don't want that to end Final Fantasy. If I have to buy a PS3, 360, or Wii, so be it, but no more delays.

It's good to know that an actual gaming company is pointing out the main problem (at least, in my opinion) of the PS3 and 360...

Wada stated that in a year or two they could do better but for now it is too much to ask consumers to have a broadband internet connection, high-definition TV, etc."

I just want a bloody console. Not all the fancy shit that comes with it.

Yes, well, I lack the high-definition TV as well. Most people I know have no such gear currently. It's all to expensive. Now I can see why a lot of people prefer the Nintendo Wii.

It's not just Square Enix that feels this way. Why do you think a lot of game developers praise the Wii over the PS3/XBOX360? The Wii is not only simpler to develop games but also more flexible platform. On the XBOX360 and PS3, the requirements to program are difficult because there are more compatibility constraints.

Also, I remember reading that Wii's architecture is very similar to the Gamecube, which developers have already seen and used for a while now.
