Team Fortress 2 idle programs are now being considered against the rules by Valve (which makes complete sense) but it appears that people don't really agree with that and the TF2 players seem to start splitting in groups: those who agree and welcome the measure and those who are hating it with all their heart. Which group is right, though?

Posts on the official Team Fortress 2 boards criticize this decision and since there are basically no real reasons to attack it (cheating is cheating, even if the game kind of pushes you to go for such techniques due to the lack of item offerings), the players generally complain about Valve’s numbers.

They need to figure out a better way to getting the hats in the game, perhaps one randomly assigned to someone on the winning team. These drops, whilst encourages us to play more, gets somewhat frustrating, especially when you see someone come in for ten minutes, when you've been playing for an hour, get a hat. -_-

Gamers cheat. Valve responds. Gamers rage.

It is a familiar tune; we are a bunch of whiny little asshats who don't deserve free stuff.

it's not cheating. we were just doing our best to try working with this awful system.
fifteen thousand people were using it because getting a hat through normal play is damn-near impossible, and they hyped the damn things up during the update which made everyone want one.

But this is Valve's game, and they make the rules. Those poeple using bots were plainly and obviously cheating, there may be some sympathetic cases of people who only checked bots out due to curiosity or something, but I think Valve are in the right here.
