In Japan, a DS game called Nanashi No Game Me is about the protagonist encountering a video game that curses the player and they must absolve themselves from the curse by playing the game.
It looks and sounds like an innocent 8-bit platformer in the initial play...until it corrupts itself.
At first it looks cheery and happy. Then the game takes on a more solemn appearance. The music gets melancholy. The difficulty ramps up. Suddenly you're in this prison with walls painted red, axes lining the walls (something flying or dropping at you), the platforms attempt to fling you at said axes, there are graphical glitches, and the music is a dissonant mess.
Oh, and it's hard. Duh.
Square Enix is taking the 8-bit game from Nanashi and making it into its own creepy little game for DSiWare. For some reason it's been split up into two parts but I suppose that's business for you. You only care about your console being creepy and hating you, right?
Nanashi No Game and its sequel have not gone out of Japan but let's hope at least this part of the game comes out here. Platformers not your thing? Maybe S-E will put out the cursed RPG too.
These two games, both priced at 500 Nintendo Points, are based on Nanashi No Game Me’s platformer, in which you jump your way through levels packed with falling platforms and guillotine blades, likely all acquired at a recent sale held by an execution surplus store.
