The PS3 Slim was going to be a huge seller for Sony, we knew and so did they. But after the first week of sales, Sony was surprised by the numbers, saying that it was ahead of the their expectation. So far the Slim has only been on sale for one week, and the holiday season hasn't even started.

The new unit went on sale last Tuesday in the region priced at GBP 249, with Chart-Track data revealing today that sales were up over 1000 per cent.

Another article on the website states sales jumped 1000%... If that's true... damn.

Well, it's very easy to jump that high week-on-week when no one was buying the fat PS3 because they were waiting for the slim.

Very true; but the 80gb classic model being the same price probably moved quite a bit of units as well.

According to that same website. In Japan the Playstation 3 sold 150,832 units in 3 days of which 150,252 of them were the Slim model. This marks a huge increase over last months sales of a mere 1,040 units.

On another article on the same website they also stated that the 1000% increase in Europe over last month also means the PS3 is outselling the Xbox 360, DS and Wii almost 3:1. May I also point out that these are merely results after a week there are still some many weeks until the final sales results for the month of September are revealed.

But that's the interesting bit: can these sales remain consistent over an elongated period of time? Any product can get a sales burst every so often, but it's the real underdogs who can keep it up after that burst.

I guess we will find out after the holiday rush.

Wow that's a shitload of sales in just one week though.

I'd have to say that it is unlikely the PS3's sales will be able to maintain this momentum indefinitely. Sales will probably still stay pretty high, but eventually the opening rush will eventually die down, at least a bit anyway.

          Impressive numbers either way
