People who have pirated Batman: Arkham Asylum will get a rude awakening while playing the game. Some of Batman's moves are taken away, including the much-needed glide move.

Square Enix will also be doing a similar thing for pirated versions of Final Fantasy XIII.

Go to the source for the full article.

Did you illegally download a cracked version of Arkham Asylum for the PC? Hope you enjoy playing with a Batman who has conveniently forgotten some of his moveset, rendering the game unbeatable.

In an amusing little thread on the Eidos forums, one pirate came to innocently report a bug, claiming that instead of gliding when the appropriate input was given, the Dark Knight would instead just spread his wings and fall to his death in poison gas.

Quoth an Eidos admin in response:

quote
The problem you have encountered is a hook in the copy protection, to catch out people who try and download cracked versions of the game for free.

It's not a bug in the game's code, it's a bug in your moral code.

Since its acquisition of Rocksteady parent Eidos, Square-Enix has announced plans to use similar DRM in its upcoming Final Fantasy XIII, where any attempt to use magic will always result in summoning a rampaging horde of Chocobos to crush the party, the player, and anyone they've ever loved.

Haha, poor pirate. That's a neat way to stop the cracked versions of the game from spreading, the other companies should follow suit.

Eidos is actually following suit, companies (Capcom and BioWare off the top of my head) have been doing this for years.

I reckon this is a really good idea.

I'm guessing they'll remove commands from FFXIII.

Very good idea as while this can be worked around by a good coder on the outside world. The next step would be to place a 256 or 512bit encryption on the code that nukes the cracked game so no one can modify it. I mean I don't know why they don't use that kind of protection of game files as it is, I mean if the user has the legal disc the game will remove the encryption for that user so they can do mods and stuff. The cracked version will keep it all encrypted and activate a bit of code to nuke their game which they can't tamper with as they cannot break the encryption. Makes sense to me though i'm not a game developer so maybe it's too much effort.

This is not a first. Prince of Persia : The Warrior Within had this. There, after a major boss fight, the prince was spawned back at the beach (the very beginning of the game) in the pirated version. But hackers obviously found a way around it.

I just want to see the look on someone's face when they use a summon and have their party barraged by Chocobos and then die. That would be hilarious!

That's somewhat ridiculous, requiring a key is supposed to stop pirates. So they created keygens and cracks. They'll fix this too.

If implemented well enough, the issue(s) will either never be fixed, or will take months and months, by which point some percentage of people will have bought it. This is what happened with Mass Effect.
It may only be 2-3%, but publishers have stated even that amount is tons of money to them, which they need to keep publishing on PC.

But anyway. This seems to be a fantastic game, and it's just sad pirates are too big of assholes to recognize that's something worth supporting, and needs to be supported in today's industry especially.

There was a car game years ago that yhe visuals would gradually break down as you played it.The game would work fine but the more you played it, the more it deteriorated until it was not possible to play.
