Over 10 Million Pokemon Traded

Deathsythe | June 14, 2007 | News | DS Misc Gaming Tech/Hardware
American and Japanese owners of Pokemon Diamond & Pearl have already traded over ten (yes 10) million Pokemons through the game’s Wi-Fi connected "Global Trading Station" or simply dubbed GTS. That’s not just a lot. Ten million could already populate a whole nation of Pokemon.

What’s even more fascinating (or disturbing, however you want to look at it) is that Pokemon Diamond & Pearl was just released about a month and a half ago in U.S. shores. The Japanese versions have been out since last fall. Also, both games are still set for a summer release in the PAL regions.
Owners of Pokémon Diamond & Pearl who live in Japan aren't able to use English letters for their monsters, while those who live in American can't enter character names using Japanese characters. And since the grass is always greener, folks in The Land of the Rising Sun want English christened Pokémon while Americans look longingly at Japanese named ones. Hence, the Wi-Fi connected "Global Trading Station" (GTS). So, far over ten million Pokémon have been exchanged via the GTS between the US and Japan. That's A LOT. The Japanese version of Diamond & Pearl went on sale last fall, but the American one didn't hit till last April. When the game finally hits PAL regions this summer, we can expect only one thing and one thing only: world peace.

The DS WiFi is becoming a more legitimate feature for gaming, though to be honest Pokemon already enjoys a great deal of clout in the industry. Trading Pokemon on a global level to get those with names outside your standard character set is a funny way to personalize the collection.

Well apparently, Japanese kids are desparate for our English named ones.

lol That's a lot of Pokemon!

I'm not surprised. Every time i go to a place with kids, they're playing gameboy...and now guess; what's the game they're playing? BINGO, it's Pokemon! eh eh eh

This just further proves Friedman's theory that the world is flat.

    Gaming Globalization FTW!

I can't believe Pokemon is still so popular. I remember being a big fan of Pokemon a few years ago but I kind of got bored of it. Anyways, 10 million Pokemon have been traded? That sure is a lot of Pokemon. Maybe in a few more months 20 million Pokemon will be traded? Who knows...

It's ridiculous that Nintendo has such lacking online funcionality with the Wii when it's doing such great things on a DS.

This coming from a guy that owns neither a DS or Wii.

The world peace part made me laugh.^^
It's crazy, seriously. I remember I read an article like this one like 1 month ago, so I decided to put my level 7 Magikarp in trade for Turtwig. It actually worked.
But these days, Japanese kids want a level 100 Mew, and they're trading a Tauros or something like that. It's sad.

That is one hell of a number to achieve, amazing achievement from a game series which I thought would have died down long ago. I couldn't have been any more wrong.

Realize that the DS has been out nearly three years now, and online support is just now ramping up with big releases like Pokemon being online. In comparison, Wii is way ahead.

I hope you didn't thumb me down for that, because that doesn't change the fact that they're hardly pushing network connectivity on the Wii when they should be.

Well what do you expect. Pokemon games are always popular, and then they decide to take it online. Also some pokemon can only be gotten in the other version. So to me it's basically no surprise.

Thats a lot of trades but it's not a surprise I think pokemons so popular because it has the cute side to it which kids love but it's also quite tactical and has a lot of rpg elements which attracts people outside of the child amrket.

No, I didn't give you a thumbs down. My comment was more an insult to the poor job done by Nintendo with the DS Wifi connection than a praise of their support of Wii.

How can you like this game... I've played 3 of those on GBA and they were identical. Same sprites build the environment around you, similar characters running around, same story each time with a few twists... I used to like Pokemon when I was a kid but only the anime.

      Definately.

Plus it was a game that people always wanted to have online and I think when people heard that it would be online.

Many old Pokemon fans started back into the games.

It's because it's been such a huge series all over the world for the past decade. It may have dropped in hype a few times, but all the fans never turned. Once you're a fan, you're always a fan!
