English police officers plan on posting "Child Missing" posters in some of the most popular areas of the game. You see, an adorable moppet namedMadeleine McCann went missing recently, and the bobbies think she might be in Second Life... or, more accurately and less snarkily, the po-po think someone in the game might have some leads as to her whereabouts.

They are truly trying everything to find this girl, although the implications that child-abductors spend their free time hanging out in Second Life is either insulting or weirdly likely, depending on how you look at it.

Countless young children disappear every day in the world, are the victims of abuse and crime, and see their short lives ended by vile scumbags, but when one is pretty, female and white, then the media start to take notice and sensationalism begins. Madeleine McCann, a British toddler of just four years of age, went missing several weeks ago at a Portugese resort when her parents left her sleeping alone to go and have lunch elsewhere. Since the girl fits the criteria above, a media storm ensued and you'd be hard pressed to have not heard about her by now. That doesn't stop the latest trends being exploited to keep the publicity going, as police officers are now putting virtual posters up in Second Life.

Jim Gamble of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Center praises the move as indicative of commitment on the part of the police force. Personally I'd call it a waste of time with no use other than to keep the story interesting and make the police look like they're "trying everything". I'd also like to be the first member of any sort of press (that I've seen) to call the parents of this child irresponsible, unfit and stupid beyond all human comprehension. I don't care how far behind you leave your child or how hungry you are, you do not leave a child alone. They abandoned their daughter to go eat, and worse, in a foreign country. Now a girl's missing, and at the risk of being perceived as heartless, no amount of pissing around in Second Life is going to help her.

Oh, and as you read this, a million other little boys and girls are being abducted, killed or raped, but sadly they just aren't photogenic enough to get this kind of attention.

Seriously this has gone way way WAY over the top.. Yes of course I want her to be found alive but for gods sake I don't want everything I do in my free time to be reminded of it.

Apparently they are also going to put Madeleine's eyes in the Google logo or something crazy like that.

Aw come on, it doesn't really affect you does it? They're just trying to find a little girl. Have a heart.

I don't think he thinks that way. He's just expressing his point of view toward a big injustice that's happening! Of course i want that girl to be found safe and sound..she's so sweet, and it will be a joy for her parents...but that's just not it! Please understand...

I don't mean to sound horrible, but I bet that quite a lot of people will be sick to death of hearing about this already, to the point where some sicko's will want her to be found in pieces. Yes it does affect us. When I want to watch TV, I get reminded of it. When I want to go on the internet, I get reminded of it. And now, when I want to play games, I get reminded of it.

With this though, it will certainly raise the awareness of other missing kids around the world, which is nice to know.

It's so not fair! I'm from Portugal and i watched a TV show, in which 3 mothers were explaining how angry they were, since when their kids disappeared, the Police told them to wait 48 hours. Also, no media spread the news. Yet, the Police from England, started looking immediately, after the parents request for help. SO NOT FAIR!!

Well it kind of begs the question why she is so much more special than any other missing child.

That leads to my way of thinking! What's the difference between her and the other children?..Oh well..

This kind of thing would work if we lived in a perfect world, a world where the pedos didn't exist.

Something like this is nothing more than a basic sheer advertisement. Sure its a great cause, and a half-way decent idea, but it is too impractical.

What are the odds that someone playing Second-Life will actually see this poster, and then notice the little girl from the poster, in the game, being stuffed into a trunk outside of their room from their window. Because god knows that if they are playing second life enough to see this next-gen equivalent of a face on a milk carton, they will not venture too far from their domain.
