Some map packs are on the way for Modern Warfare 2, though there's not much details have been revealed. For now, Activision is giving the map pack out to 5,000 winners -- details are packaged with Modern Warfare 2 energy drinks.

Everyone else will need to wait until Spring 2010 for the bundles.

Activision Blizzard certainly knows a thing or two about hauling in cash, as evidenced by the publisher's billion-dollar April-June quarter. In a post-earnings call, Activision Publishing president and CEO Mike Griffith tipped off investors and analysts as to how it plans to extend Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's sales beyond the game's rapidly approaching November 10 release, saying that the game will get a pair of map packs post-launch.

Today, Activision revealed the time frame for one of those map packs, as part of a giveaway for Modern Warfare 2-branded Monster Energy drinks that will go on sale in October. As part of a set of promotional materials provided to various media outlets, the Monster Energy packaging notes that 5,000 winners will be offered a free Modern Warfare 2 map pack, which has a "planned release" in spring 2010.

Activision declined to offer more information on the giveaway and would not comment on whether the spring 2010 map pack would be the first available for Modern Warfare 2. The Monster Energy prize opportunity also includes 100 copies of the game and 10,000 Modern Warfare 2 dashboard themes for the Xbox 360 and PS3, as well as a free can of Monster Energy drink.

Not even drinks are immune to the Modern Warfare 2 hype juggernaut.

The publisher has already enjoyed significant success with downloadable map packs for Call of Duty. In July, Activision said that the first two map packs for its most recent installment in the franchise, the 11-million-unit-selling World at War, have achieved combined sales of 4 million units. A third World at War map pack went on sale in August.

"Hey kiddies were not even going to pretend were not milking you for all your worth, we're just going to admit that we've got DLC made for you to buy BEFORE the game even comes out" - Activision, true story.

I'd put some money on them having the maps done already, if not partially complete.

Besides; any company that gives maps or various things away for free is good for the fan base. Not saying that all should be free, but I give massive respect to publishers that decide to thank their fans in that matter. Rocksteady and Atlus come to mind.

On the opposing side, you've got Capcom being the worst. Streetfighter costumes and Resident Evil 4 multiplayer was already on disk; at least Activison isn't doing that.

I don't think they would be done now. They monitor online sessions, and have hot maps to decide how to best make maps. It takes time to get the info.

I think EA is honestly worse, charging for stat boosts on their "be a pro" modes is nothing short of nefarious. Honestly a few years ago there was a comic that had madden being played with a flat football, since you had to pay to download the air.

pay for a stat boost? That's pretty ridiculous; I remember seeing something in The Godfather 2 as well; something about buying DLC to get extra money in the game... what the hell?

I hate it how game developers do this. The make you pay an appreciable sum of money for the game, then say "Oh yeah, give us some more money or else the game is now redundant." Bungie are the worst - at least most games still let you play them without the maps. There are like, 2 playlists on Halo 3 that don't require any maps.

Will these Energy drinks be on for sale in the UK? I want to try these drinks out to see what they'll taste like, and to get the chance to win the map, but really releasing information about maps already, October just started :/
