So instead of the NoE stub we got, Kotaku's Stephen Totilo was able to watch a Nintendo representative demo the feature in Nintendo's upcoming November release New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

What was known as Demo Play or the Kind Code is now officially known as Super Guide. The details:

  • Only available in single-player
  • Cannot activate unless you've died eight times in a level
    • The intent is "to offer Super Guide as a helper for its less skilled customers and to allow its designers to make some of the game's levels devilishly difficult"
    • Even then, it's still optional
  • The playthroughs are done in-engine, and not through a video
  • The Super Guide runs will only get you to the end of the level, and not explore any secret locations
    • These, additionally, won't be the perfect or best way to clear a level
  • You can jump into the level at any time by the press of a button.
    • While the Super Guide is in progress, the screen will clearly display that the Guide is running.
  • The level completion counts so the player can continue to progress through the game

Totilo also noted that the levels seemed harder than the latest Mario side-scroller, New Super Mario Bros. on DS.

The mysteries about Nintendo's experimental helper-mode (aka the "kind code") are no more, as today Kotaku was finally able to see the innovative feature in action in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

The assistance mode will be introduced in Nintendo's marquee November title for the Wii and is officially called the Super Guide. Using it, players who struggle with the classic side-scrolling action in New Super Mario Bros. Wii will be able to let the Wii run through a level on its own, automatically playing through the content without the gamer's input. Players will have the option to re-assume control at any time.

It's great that Nintendo have found (what seems to be) the perfect balance between their casual audience and their "veteran" fans. NSMB Wii is really shaping up to be one of the best (and hopefully top selling!) Wii games.

In one game? Is ONE GAME really enough to stem and forgive the sea of casual... stuff... that the Wii has been spitting out for the last year and a half, almost completely shunning there hardcore fans?

I really don't see it myself. But that is just my view on it.

Where does he say it's enough for the abandoned to forgive them? I'm confused. All he says is that's this game has a perfect balance. How does it translate?

          I'm completely confused as well.

I don't believe in all that "abandoned" bullshit anyway.

When I read Nintendo have found the perfect balance between casual and hardcore, and I can't see the other hardcore games out lately. IMO of course.

I'm actually looking forward to NSMB, co-op heavy games are always great fun.

He meant they've found the perfect balance between casual and hardcore in terms of gameplay for this game alone; no other game out is considered in that, just the gameplay of this game.

      Just misinterpretation is all.
