FIFA 10 looks to be one of the best soccer titles to release in recent years. It went virtually uncontested with the poor showing of PES 2009. In Europe it is already a hit and setting records in just it's first week.

Although fans in the United States have to wait another two weeks to get their hands on EA’s next installment in the FIFA series, Europe has had it since October 2nd. Since then 1.7 million copies of FIFA 10 were sold. This sets a record for the fastest selling sports game ever and it hasn’t even been a full week yet. The game has hit the number one spot on the UK charts across all platforms and will likely remain at the top with Pro Evolution 2010 still a couple of weeks away.

are we surprised that a soccer game is the fastest selling sports game? no, since almost every country in the world plays it.

Of course there was a poor showing for PES 2009; it's been out for most of last season. =\

      This is true.
I've only known one guy who was into it, and everyone made fun of him for it.

i guess you can call it a joke if its the most played sport in U.S. but yes most people dont watch soccer or hockey cause there's not enough scoring happening just like no one likes a low scoring football or baseball game.

Soccer to Americans vs Europeans is what hockey is to Americans vs Canadians.
I like hockey well enough (I am a patient man) but soccer just doesn't do it for me. Like most sports I enjoy playing it far more than watching it though.

I don't get how football is slower than American football when in American football they take a break like every 5 mins?

It's all about the threat to score. If there are two good teams in a soccer match, there are very few opportunities to score. The defenses are too good. Football on the other hand can change in an instant, just a broken tackle or missed coverage can change an entire game. The offsides penalty in soccer makes it much harder for similar scenarios.

Lawl, you have similar scenarios in football (why you refer to your sport as football I will never know). Admittedly not as often, but they are far more significant when they do.

Yeah, there are so many stoppages in American football it's unbelievable. How long does the average game go for?

Like 20 seconds, then they regroup and do it again.
That's what made me turn off the super-bowl within a couple of minutes.

No, I meant a complete game/match, including stoppages.

There's like 20 second stoppages after plays (at most 20 seconds, usually it's only 5 or 10)...that isn't very much, considering a lot of international football looks like they're trying to have stoppages. Jesus, just look at the end of games. Almost nothing gets done because the managers are swapping players in and out to kill time and kicking the ball away. Even when they're playing, most games are slow as hell because the teams are content just moving the ball around non-aggressively.

The average game takes 120-150 minutes...not much longer than an international football game.

Actually the whole game is moving the ball forward aggressively. Its just that in proper football the defence is very good and so shut them off. Your going to pass the ball. Not charge into 3 defenders. An international football game is 90 mins.

in American football, a team can score just about any time. even if they are way back 70 yards away. if things go right the QB can long bomb the ball way down the field to a receiver and he can run 40 yards to score. happens more than youd think.

but it is more slow paced than international football.

An international football game takes longer than 90 minutes to complete (GG though just saying the total gametime as if that's the actual completion time), and plays take forever to develop and often play is incredibly slow. The whole game is really passing back and forth until you find an opening in the defense, but even when you do the success rate is incredibly small so (as I said), the game moves very slowly.

It just depends on what you mean by "slow paced". The score racks up faster in American football, but it's true that it takes around 20 seconds before each play before the offense snaps the ball. Some teams will go faster though, like Oklahoma who are notorious for quickly lining up and snapping the ball often without even huddling. Also, the losing team will always pick up the pace towards the end of the game in an attempt to win before time runs out.

Depends on your preference really, but I like how with American football you're able to anticipate when something is going to happen. It's a game of progression, so every yard gained is progress towards scoring. With soccer, you're just left sitting there watching the teams pass for a long while until someone finally has an opening to score.

Rightly so tbh, I thought it would be a slight improvment but I was very impressed with it. My second favourite football game ever probably (behind PES6 for PS2).

KyleDawg makes some good points though i think football would be that much better without the commercial breaks. If you have ever been to a game you'll see the players standing around too many times waiting for the game to come back from commercial breaks. thats why i dont enjoy going to the games as much it gets very boring when you constantly see the players walking around doing nothing time and time again. at least with hockey and soccer there is constantly something going on and you can really miss a goal if you just stop watching for a min or two.

commercials are annoying but they help pay for the game. you would think the NFL or whatever would have the money but a game costs a TON to put on i guess. especially the Superbowl, but in that case the commercials are fun to watch.

Ha, why do so many people in this discussion hate soccer/football so much? =/

I personally love soccer, and have always been a fan of it. I never watch or play the games, but it sure is fun to play.
