The director of the PlayStation Network Eric Lempel spoke to GameTrailers.com in an interview about the future of the PlayStation Network on the PS3.

Lempel stressed the fact that the PlayStation Network and the Xbox Live service are pretty much one in the same at this point with the same features for each service.

Could Sony be using these new upcoming features as a reason to charge for the service? We will have to wait and see...

I would certaintly hope that the Playstation Network remains free. It's what gives PS3 online gaming an edge over XBox360 online gaming. Sony could continue to provide free gaming but charge for features such as Home, this would still earn them money while keeping consumers wanting to buy the PS3 and PS3 games to play online for free.

Are Sony willing to shoot themselves in the foot again?

Well it depends on how much. It could be $15 dollars a month or a year. But again we have to wait an see.

I really hope it doesn't. I'd love to see Sony put a fire under Xbox in terms of online gaming. So much of the great entertainment value in console gaming comes from online play and if Sony can find a way to make it work for free and everyone enjoy it, maybe Microsoft would follow suit.

LMAO@$15 a month. I'm more concerned with whether they would charge because of new features in the service or charge to make up for losses on the PS3. If its the latter, then we shouldn't have to take the hit as consumers. Sony is the one who said the PSN would be free and they had to know that the PS3 would be hitting them in pockets.

$15 a year wouldn't be too bad, but keeping it free certainly gives it an advantage over Xbox Live.

Oh dear, I'd hate for Sony to start charging, that's so Microsoft. Plus it's so insulting to it's fans.

If they charge for online they will lose many customers, myself included.

PS3 is already labeled as expensive, suddenly charging for online service would only further this idea. Bad idea at any price.

Considering the PSN's upcoming features, I don't think one would blame them for charging. Not any time soon though, they barely have anything to charge for anyways, now given some time and lots of content (like Home) one has to wonder if it's worth the money. And if it is, it might actually cost less than Live.
