New Super Mario Bros. Wii has four playable characters: Mario, Luigi, Toad and... another Toad.

If you're wondering why Peach isn't the fourth playable character, Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto recently revealed that the reason she playable is because it was difficult to animate her dress. According to Miyamoto: "we would have to have special processing and programming to handle how the skirt is handled within the gameplay."

Why two toads instead of what might seem like the obvious choice, Princess Peach? Creator Shigeru Miyamoto answered this question (asked by Wired Game|Life's Tracey John), and the answer was... surprising. Turns out, you can blame her signature pink dress.

"Originally, I thought it would be nice if we could have Princess Peach in there as a playable character," he said through a translator, "but in fact, the Toad characters have a physical that's a little bit closer to Mario and Luigi. In particular, if we had one character out of the four that wore a dress, we would have to have special processing and programming to handle how the skirt is handled within the gameplay."

indeed, it's pure laziness. this is ridiculous coming from a big company like nintendo "well it would take extra work to put her in the game so we're just going to clone toad". only the best from nintendo!

It didn't seem so hard in 1988...

But then again, perhaps pants play an important role in the game play.

And is the fact that she was considered as a playable character a hint that the story might be... a little different?

Yup, this time you'll be saving the other one.

Does this mean that all four characters will probably be identical in all that they can do? Seems like they wouldn't want to make Peach the same as them and didn't want to pay a guy to differeniate her from the others.

I think it's because of the spin jump. With Mario, Luigi and Toad if they spin, they just rotate. But with Peach if she were to spin her dress would need different animation and would probably lift up if she spun. Plus how I hear it. Peach is kidnapped by the Koopalings and Bowser Jr. Using a Cake as a trojan horse.

So HAL can do it with Smash Bros but Nintendo can't with this?

At worse why not just change her outfit to a short skirt, like what she wears in the countless sports spinoff games? I think an outfit change would be better received than cloning Toad.

Or maybe just don't use a dress at all?

"I herd that thse dyz gurlz sumtimez ware pantz? Lol R thy boyz?"

Say, didn't she wear shorts in one game or another? Mario tennis or something?

        Insanity Prevails Oct 18, 09
Pretty sure it's a short skirt in the tennis games. She does wear shorts for strikers and baseball though so that might be where you're getting it from, and yes that is a good alternative too.

I'd love it if Miyamoto was fooling around and wanted to see how people would respond.

Or, he just didn't want to give away the plot. He he.

If you didn't see the other comment before whichever monkey deleted it did, don't try to understand that one.

Peach's physics would be different from Mario/Luigi/Toad simply because of her dress. For a half-competitive multiplayer game, you need to have different balances and maybe more character types, and different designs to account for Peach's different abilities, like the ability to float via her dress if you include her in the game. Everything would snowball from there and could be a nightmare from a designer/programmer standpoint.

At least with Mario/Luigi/Toad you have the same ability base that makes it much more simpler to focus on one of the most important things in platformers: level design.

Just because they "did it in Super Smash Bros." doesn't mean much because that is a fighting game versus this game as a platformer.

Then they could change her outfit. It's not as if she's never worn anything but the same pink dress before.

I think you're absolutely right about the issue of balance. Her floating is kinda like a trademark of hers and they'd have to include it if they included her, which would upset the balance. Yet, at the same time, I honestly wouldn't mind it being like Super Mario Bros. 2. Maybe have her as an unlockable character to give some variation, although I doubt Nintendo would take that route.

Alright, tell me this: why is it that Super Smash Brothers worked but not this? Is Peach just not as important or what?

In Smash, Peach is getting kicked in the head, blown into the air, and sliced with a sword. The animation in this game shouldn't prove any more difficult. Sounds like laziness to me.

its built on the same engine they used for new super mario bros ds, SSBB was built on a totally different engine, plus uses different character models, skeletons, and different coding, as it is a fighting game.

        Slumpy monkey Oct 17, 09
There not using the exact same engine as the new DS game. Of course their upgrading it.

They're skipping including Peach because they don't want to animate her dress; don't underestimate the laziness.

        Slumpy monkey Oct 17, 09
I know I was saying that there not using the DS engine so thats not an excuse.

They don't animate the flowing dress frame by frame, its done by the program.

I think maybe the WII isnt powerful enough. so to avoid it looking shit, they just removed it.

That's just...weak. No excuses for being that lazy. I hope they're lying when they say that's why.

Btw Akira, those are some of the weakest excuses I've ever seen.

sounds pretty lazy to me. it would be really cool if this was like a new version of SMB2, only with the level design of 1 and 3.

Oh Nintendo, you just never seize to amaze me. First you take away half of the hardcore games, and now that you are releasing a possible good hardcore title, you take away characters. Amazing, just amazing!

Yes, I'll never forget the day Nintendo reps ran into retailers, stripping the store of half of their hardcore games. A very sad day indeed.

I don't think Peach should've been playable anyway, since she's the one that has to be rescued. If Peach didn't get kidnapped by Bowser, the story would be 'Mario,Luigi, and Peach decided to explore the entire mushroom kingdom',which is even lamer than the usual 'Peach has been kidnapped by Bowser....AGAIN'

I think they should've made completely new characters instead of a couple of Toads.

they could have to go rescue Daisy ya know. or it would be funny if DK got kidnapped this time!

Instead of stars you collect massive bananas.

May as *bleep*ing well, it's about as innovative as boob jiggling and that passes a game for new these days.

Daisy's basically another Peach,so I don't think Daisy should be the princess you need to save either. Besdides,Why would Bowser want to kidnap Daisy when he's always trying to get Peach?

I don't think DK is weak (or stupid) enough to get kidnapped, maybe Diddy kong should get kidnapped instead? Then Mario and Luigi could team up with DK to save him

hey, maybe Bowser got tired of blonds and craved a brunette for a change...

and you know that DK got kidnapped in Donkey Kong Country 2, right? you played as Diddy and that dumb girl with the long pony tail. then i think DK and Diddy got kidnapped in the 3rd game, cause it was that girl and some other tool.

I understand why they would need to do this for storyline?
But COME ON, at least they could have used another character than a second toad (or most likely Toadette) like yoshi!

You might be right about that, just put a net above a bunch of bannanas, and Bowser could easily catch DK.....
