In a recent podcast, an Infinity Ward developer brought out the news that the PC multiplayer aspect of Modern Warfare 2 would rely heavily on it's matchmaking system. What's wrong with that, you may ask? The scrapping of dedicated servers, an option that players could use to set their rules, customization, etc.. Whilst this brings about somewhat more competitive gaming for clans and various teams of similar rank, it can make other players feel like they have less control. The community response to this rather late announcement is a petition signing in an attempt to fix this dispute. Other fan reactions have led to the cancellation of pre-orders for the game.

In a webcast this morning, Robert Bowling revealed the existence of IWNet, a matchmaking service Infinity Ward will operate beginning with Modern Warfare 2. But it ends dedicated servers, and fundamentally changes the culture of the game's PC community.

Here's the score: by building up its own matchmaking service riding shotgun with Steam, "you can get in and play with players your same rank," Bowling said. However, "You're completely reliant on IWNet and there is no dedicated server or server list. You rely on IW Net for matchmaking and your games, but you still have your private matches."

But the news is not being taken well. The BASHandSlash guys referred to the vehemence in the chatlog running concurrent with the program, and terms such as "Black Saturday" and "a day of infamy" are being thrown around. "They've made Jesus cry," is another reaction, particularly from the competitive PC community whose future also is affected. "The server community is what's made us. It's what defined us," says Josh Pickler of planetmedalofhonor.com "IW.NET is getting the PC community to turn into consoles. You're trying to re-write our history."

'Tis true. I can't help but think that ActiVision had a big piece of the pie with this decision though. Unless IW really were this...ignorant, which I refuse to believe. It's a new idea gone wrong.

Over 2,000 pre-orders have been cancelled from Amazon within a few hours.

    They should have both.

Matchmaking is good when you just want a random game.

Hahah Why am I thinking that Activision is trying their hardest to piss everyone off?

Haha, this simply proves what I've been saying aaalll along. IW have no clue what they're doing. They stumbled upon success with CoD4, and now the only thing carrying MW2 is the hype.

Hate to break it to IW and Activision, but Consoler's don't like matchmaking as much as the PCers.

What you've been saying all along is just straight up wrong.

CoD4 was not Infinty Ward's first successful game. They certainly didn't stumble on anything.

What is it with PC gamers and petitions? Has a petition like this ever actually worked?

More importantly, what it is with Activision and being massive *bleep*ing retards?

I think it has a lot to do with the fact that PC gaming is changing to keep it more in line with Console gaming and they don't like it. Matchmaking is a Console addition as many Console gamers are too retarded to set up a game themselves. PC gamers don't like when PC gaming traditions like dedicated servers are shafted for something as stupid as matchmaking. Other petitions I haven't a clue, maybe they like them? I agree with the PC gamers on this one though, Activision are *bleep*ing stupid you don't remove dedicated servers on a PC game, PC gamers buy games on the PC for the added control and the funky settings they can change when they control the server.

I'm not saying their complaints aren't warranted, I'm just wondering when a petition has ever changed a developers mind (or at least one as mind-numbingly stupid and inexplicably uncaring as Activision). It's just a waste of time.

Well when your petition has well over 38,000 signatures saying they wont be buying the game they might be paying attention. Im glad I planned not to buy MW2 a long time ago so IW doesn't have me grasped by the balls.

And from reading around the web, it was IW decision this time, not activisions. Pssh, never thought they where great devs to begin with.

38,000 saying they won't. 37,000 lying through their teeth. Both Activision and IW know this. Hell, they could just not release the game on PC at all and still get a freakin' treasury. It doesn't matter to them.
