The new article gives us a comprehensive view on exactly how the FFXIII world looks and works, including new information concerning 'Cocoon', 'Pulse', 'Prisoners', and 'The Organization' and more.

The world of Final Fantasy XIII is based in a government-controlled floating fortress called 'Cocoon', which is defended by advanced technology and 'The Crystals'.
Those cast out of Cocoon are placed into the world below, called Pulse. The citizens of Pulse rebelled against this unfair treatment, and threaten to attack the government itself, which has caused much fear within Cocoon.

Cocoon: Many people have mistaken this to be an image of Cocoon.
This image is actually a image of Pulse being attacked by Cocoon troops for invading. The people of Cocoon fear the 'foreign beings' who live within Pulse.

The Organization: The Organization manages the Cocoon. It has many airborne shuttles and assaults guarding it. They also use a 'special power' that belongs to monsters and magic. The Organization force the disposal of anyone who is assumed of being involved with the 'foreign materials' of Pulse.

Inside the Cocoon: The odd flying creature, the train, and the many dark structures seen in the screens and the trailer are the interior of Cocoon.
Or rather, it's the edge of Cocoon, since this is where we first see the prisoners being deported (in the train) towards Pulse.

The Prisoners: The prisoners seen in the trailer are those who were suspected of having come into contact with the 'foreign materials'. These people are in a state where they become infected with a virus due to their contact with the 'foreign materials'. They are deported to Pulse.
In the FFXIII trailer, Lightning was seen trying to rescue them.

The Exterior Buildings: So the FFXIII world has a sky too? Of course it does!
From this image, we can see that the left side of the sky is very clear and light blue, whilst the right side is cloudy and dark. Why is that? Is it because of the crystals? Or is Pulse slowly seeping into Cocoon?

A crest and insignia: It's known that Lightning is in some sort of organization (she was supposedly sent by the Organization to destroy mankind), and that her name is a codename.
In the image, her crest can be seen.
Look at Lightning's gunblade - It has special characters/insignia cut onto it. Could it be some certain code of her organization or a possible battle system much like the License Board from FF12?

Shiva: The two Shiva summons will be used as a motorcycle by the mysterious blonde man that appeared in the trailers. Will Lightning also be able to use the twin Shivas as a form of transport? Or as summon monsters? Only time will tell.
