So, it looks like the Tekken series is finally going online with Tekken 5/Dark Resurrection on the PS3. This is great news right here. This must mean that Tekken 6 will be online as well.

Last week IGN reported that the latest issue of Japanese rag Famitsu revealed that Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection would be updated with online components. Today Namco Bandai confirmed this news to be true for gamers in the U.S., as well, and clarified the various new features to be injected into the fighting game.

For the first time in Tekken's history the game will be playable online. Several new modes are being added to the game: Opti Match, Quick Match, Custom Match, and Friend Match. While waiting in a lobby, players can view the current bout and study their opponent's techniques. Voice chat will be available so you don't have to call up your buddy in Albuquerque to gloat.

Single-player content is being added, too: a Practice Mode and Survival Mode, in which players take on opponents one after another without regenerating their health. The update, officially called Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection Online, will be available later this year for $9.99.

Hm, it will certainly be interesting to see how Tekken does online, and even though I'm not really a fan of the series, I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this. Good article.

Why didn't they do this with Tekken 5? Meh...money-making I'll wait for Tekken 6, but it's good to know that they are finally going online.

Hmm hopefully lag won't be too much of an issue, fighting games rely on quick button presses generally so lag could really be a problem. I think that's why Sega didn't take virtual fighter 5 online.
