Unreal Tournament 3 for PC, PS3 to get head start over Xbox 360 release

Final Blade | June 20, 2007 | News | PC Playstation 3
A GameTrailers interview confirms that the PC and PS3 versions of Unreal Tournament 3 will be released ahead of the Xbox 360 edition. Apparently some extra time will be needed to decide how the game's support for user created mods will pan out on Xbox Live.
Next to Half-Life and Halo, it's probably the most recognizable name in FPS gaming: Unreal. As most every avid gamer knows, Epic's Unreal Tournament 3 is easily one of the most anticipated games of the new generation, and now, we learn the PS3 and PC versions will release ahead of the Xbox 360 version. Oooh, big news for PS3 owners; getting such a huge timed exclusive.

The rumor began a few days ago, and initially met with much resistance. After all, Epic has produced Gears of War, a 360 exclusive and arguably the best game on the system. Furthermore, their past comments regarding Sony's next-gen system haven't been exactly glowing. But thanks to that recent Geoff Keighley interview on GameTrailers yesterday, this rumor was proven true; Unreal Tournament 3 will be a timed console exclusive.

The reason? Well, Keighley said it's because Sony is allowing user-created mods for the game, and Microsoft thinks it could be used to "undermine" their Xbox Live service. The 360 version will come out at a later date after "they resolve some issues." That implies there's more than one issue, so we'll have to keep an eye on this...and also, how long is this "timed" exclusive? At last check, the game was scheduled for a January 2008 release (Q3 2007 in Europe), so do we have an update on this?

Guess we'll have to wait on the details. But for now, this is pretty good news for PS3 owners. UT 3 will kick much ass, guaranteed.

Sweet news, but the only thing I wonder is if players will be able to clash on all platforms, something PC gamers have dreamed of for quite some time without the console side blaming inferior hardware as their handicap.

Chances are MS still wants to have a huge iron fist on Xbox Live and user created anything is a threat to that controlled environment. It's been that way for a while though so I guess maybe if anyone can do it, Epic can for breaking them of that habit, I know there's many gamers that would jump for joy to be able to use custom maps and mods to increase the gameplay, I mean afterall Unreal is practically founded on their massive support from the consumer base.

The only problem is its cost money to get the maps. I rather play it online for free. Screw the maps, and extra content that MS has, on XBL

Official maps you have to pay for well in Microsoft's case i don't think Sony have charged a thing for any of their added content yet, but this is user created mods and maps in a console game they probably won't have charges on them.

Beggars can't be choosers XBL is only $50 for the year...that's less than a next-gen game right now, and it lasts the entire year. And not all the content costs cash. Sometimes there are these title updates and such with games when we put them in.

We don't need to pay for the maps if we don't want to. Can't wait for UT 3!

I was actually refering to the PC community for the history of custom gaming on Unreal, if you look at the past individuals and teams have made quite a few mods and maps and other things for the game with no cost attached at all. It would be nice if console platforms were open to be able to download and enjoy the same rewards from the fans.

There's only one thing I hate about this game......

I cant decide whether I'm getting the PS3 version or the PC version.

On one hand, my clanmates are getting the PC version and a couple of my good friends from school are getting the PC version. On the other hand, my PC could and should be so much better, and it's gonna look and play TONS better on the PS3.

It's a really easy decision Guticb; PC!

      It's where Unreal belongs.

Well, Sony is allowing mods, that's the only reason why it's getting it first. Modding has become such a problem on the 360 that Microsoft is trying to eliminate it all together.
