A 35 year old man, known only as "Jan H.", recently caused a blackout at the Sophia Hospital in the Netherlands because he thought he was in a Silent Hill game.

While no one was seriously hurt during the 45 minute blackout, Jan caused a great disturbance in the hospital. Elevators became stuck and workers had to manually respirate the patients in the intensive care unit.

Later in court, Jan claimed he had suffered a psychotic break in the hospital which led him to believe that shutting down the hospital's power would allow him to acquire a toothbrush that was needed to complete a Silent Hill puzzle.

Jan was found not guilty. The court ruled he had "no idea of the true consequences of his deed," and he will instead recieve psychiatric treatment.

It's things like this that made me want to become a psychiatrist :)

Some people can think up any excuse to get out of trouble. What's next, someone saying "The only reason i started jumping up and down on my neighbours Mushroom patch was because i thought i was playing Mario."?

This just needs a permanent entry with the generic title "Mental person causes trouble, blames games."

    It's always the games' fault.

This seems like scraping the barrel for an excuse for his actions though.

People will blame anything else to excuse their own wrong actions . . .

    Video Games
    Friends
    Parents
    Their Boss
Strangers who looked at them wrong . . .
    . . . .
    . . . .

For once I'm glad games were blamed because this story is awesome. XD

Though technically he knew it wasn't the game's fault. It was his mental disorder. So at least the reports weren't trying to make it sound like Silent Hill was the problem.

That was what saved the story for me. I came in here ready to blast yet another piece of shit for blaming games on their own stupidity and poor decisions. Instead I get this story. You feel for the staff of the hospital and the patients obviously, but it's still amusing.

Isn't being in Silent Hill a pre-requisite of being in Silent Hill.

Except for Silent Hill: Homecoming that takes place smack dab in "not Silent Hill"

The only thing that could make this article better is if he ended up finding a toothbrush after doing it

well hey at least no one was hurt. power went out which for a hospital can be dangerous, but it all worked out. if someone had gotten hurt then he would be in deep shit.

Wow. That is actually quite interesting. I love hearing about people going nuts (hell, I wrote a paper on Schizo in Psychology class and loved every part of it; got an A, fyi), especially when its as deep as this - Being completely detached from reality and stuck inside his head. What a wonderful world he must live in...

Guess he chose the right game to get warped into though. The toothbrush was very interesting too. I wonder if this man has had problems with his teeth. The toothbrush could represent his regret for poor hygiene. If thats the case, he really is a case.
