Is the entertainment industry starting to show signs of an evolution or migration of interests? While games may sell for a much higher price than a movie ticket, it isn't very often you here of games opening sales records on the same level as their Hollywood counterparts. However, this is exactly what the new Call of Duty title, Modern Warfare 2, has achieved. The games US$335mil opening weekend sales have beaten the box office record for an opening weekend held by the recent smash hit The Dark Knight.

Prices at source are in Australian Dollars unless specified otherwise.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 blasted past $US300 million ($324.4 million) in sales on its opening day, blowing away Hollywood films to become the highest-grossing entertainment launch ever.

"MW2" sold 4.7 million copies and racked up $335 million dollars in sales in the US and UK alone when the eagerly anticipated title made its worldwide debut this week, according to publisher Activision.

The videogame bested Batman superhero film The Dark Knight, which holds the record for the top opening weekend ever by taking in $171 million dollars in July 2008.

Cultural phenomenon

"The Call of Duty franchise has become a cultural phenomenon showing the power of videogames as an entertainment medium," said Activision chief executive Mike Griffith.

MW2 is the sixth title in the Call of Duty franchise that has won a devoted following for its cinematic gameplay since the first version was released in 2003.

Activision believes MW2 will be such a hit that the California-based company will see record operating margins. Pre-orders for the videogame – priced at up to $120 - were the highest in the firm's history.

The controversy probably didn't hurt sales though either XD

Well, if you take into account the price of the game, it wouldn't have beaten Dark Knight in the number of units (tickets vs game disks) sold, not even close really.

Still, it's quite a feather in their cap.

Tbh the price of a game is more than 8-10x more than a ticket for the cinema, so if you take this into account and make it so each cinema ticket is the same price as a copy of MW2 then Dark Knight completely kicks the crap out of MW2's sales records.

Therefore this article is just downright stupid.

yeah but you arent supposed to analyze it so much! we need to convince Hollywood that video games are whipping their asses so that hopefully they will put some more time into new movies.

some things they do put time/money into, but most of the time even if they put a lot of either into something it still turns out crap. case in point: Twilight, or more recently the GI Joe or Transformers 2 film. or like you said, Romcoms, which always suck and they probly put a lot into those also.

where as for the most part, when they put a lot of time and money into a game it often turns out pretty well.

It is a bit of a skewed way to look at it, but I'm happy with any evidence that suggests games are becoming more mainstream. I play games at about a ratio of 4:1 against watching movies. Now all we need are some decent UK gaming TV shows...
