Last week Nintendo of America's Reggie Fils-Aime said that he believes New Super Mario Bros. Wii will outsell Modern Warfare 2 on a single platform.

Now that Modern Warfare 2 has been released, Reggie stated that he is not surprised at how many units have already sold, although he expects MW2 to have trouble maintaining high sales numbers while NSMB Wii will sell consisently for the next few years...

Here’s Fils-Aime’s response when asked if he was surprised by the success of Modern Warfare 2.

“You know, I was not. We know that it’s a high-quality title. We know that it will do exceptionally well. Their challenge is going to be sustaining that. It was so big so fast, what happens next week and the week after? Versus Mario is going to sell for high numbers every day now through, really, for the next couple of years.”

He might be arrogant as hell, but he could be right guys. Modern Warefare 2 is aimed at gamers, New Super Mario Bros Wii is aimed at gamers and families. It even boasts it's 4 player mode on the front cover. The DS New Super Mario is still selling quite strong.

Just wait until Janruary, then you can start the playground name-calling.

Why can't Reggie wait until January? Seriously, wtf is the point of this claim? What's the point of comparing it to MW2?

If he wants to play the sales figures angle shouldn't he wait until there are actual sales figures to compare instead of coming across as an arrogant twat where there is currently nothing to substantiate such a remark?

Watch the end of the video in the source; he does talk a little about why he says that. Even the interviewer even sees it a stupidly big claim at this point.

But hey, it’s the business world, and with a company like Nintendo trying to interest people in their games with an interview, why not say that their game will outsell someone else’s?

Super Mario galaxy has sold 8.2 million copies.

MW2 sold 4.7 million copies in its first weekend. Obviously, Mario isnt as strong as a competitor as he is trying to make out.

... Reggie, I'm sure you're a lovely and sweet guy in real life, and I'm sure your carer enjoys reading you bedtime stories, but do us all a favor and stop saying things. Like, completely. Give up talking. For us, Reggie, if not for yourself... for us.

Y'all might be getting upset about this, but I honestly find it hilarious!

"NSMBW is going to outsell MW2 across all platforms!
    MW2 comes out.
"Uhh . . . yeah, so? NSMBW is going to sell LONGER than MW2, therefore sell more!"
What ever can we expect to see next? Any guesses?

I'm betting next we're going to see something that talks about MW2 being a typical shooter whereas NSMBW is a classic and has something for both casual and hardcore fans!

NSMBW will sell more than MW2 to people over the age of 65?

Cause I'd put money on that.

God, I hope there's a cure for verbal diarrhea.

I kinda hope NSMB Wii does relatively horrible just to shut him up. He's just becoming into an annoying prick now. People actually looked up to him when he used to take the stage, but now he's just acting like a retard. So yeah, it's for your own good Reggie.

I once had a teacher in jr high school/middle school who explained it as:

"Diarrhea of the mouth and constipation of the brain."

Diarrhea of the mouth I can handle, but constipation of the brain? Ew...

        Still, it's a fantastic analogy.

It will amuse me greatly when NSMBWii passes Modern Warfare 2 in total sales. It's inevitable it will sell more. All Reggie is doing now is trying to rile up some of the truly hardcore Nintendoites who were thinking of buying the game later instead of on launch day.

NSMBWii won't leave the NPD Top Ten until Galaxy 2 comes out. Mark my words.

I don't think you know what inevitable means. Galaxy sold 8.02 million worldwide as of march 31st 2009. Not to mention, it's very difficult to pirate Wii games as opposed to PC.

MW2 did more than half of that on day 1. Wii is losing steam fast. This is desperation we're seeing. Either that or seriously misguided confidence.

        kingjfs Nov 15, 09
Modern Warfare has sold only a fraction of its 4.7 million on the PC. And beyon that, New Super Mario Bros. on the DS has sold almost 20 million copies worldwide. That's the mark you need to use as a comparison because they're both in 2D. I repeat, it is inevitable.

As for desperation, the Wii continues to outsell every other console month in and month out. If that's desperation, sign me up, I wanna be deprived!

the only way NSMBWii can hope to pass MW2 in sales is only if you compare the sales of MW2 on 1 system only, like the one its selling the least on which is probably PC. if you go by that comparison then, maybe NSMB will outsell it.

anything other than that and, no deal Howie.

No shit it's sold only a fraction of it's 4.7 million on the PC. That's only a fraction of the platforms they released it for...that's grade school logic.

And comparing New Super Mario Bros. on the DS and how well it sold to how well NSMBWii will sell isn't logic at all. They're two different systems. DS has more consoles out there and cheaper games. It doesn't work that way.

If you didn't buy Galaxy, chances are you aren't chomping at the bit for NSMB. So basically if they sell over 8 million they'd be lucky.

I'm not sure, even if it sells are low consistently... it's still consistent sales.

MW2 got a huge burst on launch and will eventually fade since pretty much everyone who wants it has it already.

That's not to say that Mario will sell more overall however.

Next thing you know, NSBWii will be replacing Wii Sports for the holiday season to try and beat out Modern Warfare 2!
