Apparently Activision doesn't think they have made enough money on the Call of Duty franchise. They are now starting to think about adding an annual fee to play online. If this does come to pass you can say good by to most of your user base.

"It's definitely an aspiration that we see potential in, particularly as we look at different business models to monetize the online gameplay," said Tippl. "There's good knowledge exchange happening between the Blizzard folks and our online guys."

"We have great experience also on Call of Duty with the success we had on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. A lot of that knowledge is getting actually built into the Battle.Net platform and the design of that," he added. "I think it's been mutually beneficial, and you should expect us to test and ultimately launch additional online monetization models of some of some of our biggest franchises like Call of Duty."

I tried real hard to think of a funny and sarcastic way to talk down on activision and how much they love their money, but this......

This is just going overboard. IT'S A *bleep*ING FPS.

Oh what the hell!? If that were to happen, I'd stop playing the game. I already pay a fee for XBL.

Jesus, Blizzard must be influencing Activision's already stupid decisions now too. And lets not forget about Microsoft, the worlds biggest cash cow, also probably playing a role in this bullshit.

Oh ya, Microsoft is a huge reason for this...

yeah its all Microsoft's fault. thats why Activision's games come out on PS3 too.

and what does Blizzard have to do with it? they only charge to play for WOW, which is obvious since its an MMO.

      @Shattered

I seriously doubt the Blizzard side is influencing Activision to do this. Blizzard only charges a monthly fee for one game, WoW, because it is a *bleep*ing MMORPG. The president of Blizzard has gone on to say that SC2 and D3 will be playable on Bnet2.0 for free.

If Blizzard was influencing Activision, then wouldn't they want to enforce fees for Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3?

This article misses the point entirely, they are talking about a new CoD game, one they described as more of an MMO then a casual FPS like MW2. Don't go to extremes

No they dont. They never mention anything to do with a MMO COD.

The survey centered around the idea of a monthly service that gives subscribers additional multiplayer and gameplay enhancements for future Call of Duty titles.
        quote
what would be the natural evolution of a property like Call of Duty into a massively multiplayer environment, and how do you monetise that, the same rules apply."
That is what they are reffering too.

That doesn't mean they're making an MMO or planning on one.

But it wont be a stand alone game. From what I read, it sounds like paying for extra goods. Which is stupid as those features should come in the game in the first place.

No, They are thinking about it. They must be planning something if they are wondering how to evolve the franchise into one.

They aren't planning on morphing the franchise into one, that's what I'm saying. Massively Multiplayer Environment doesn't mean they're going to make an MMO. At most they would make it like MAG.

yeah i could see them making a future COD into a MAG type game, that might actually be cool if it worked right. in that case, i wouldnt blame them for charging a bit to play, dedicated servers for that would cost a lot.

they could also be talking about micro transactions in online COD games, where you pay for special privileges or maybe exclusive perks or something.

Microsoft wouldn't be involved in this decision at all... considering CoD is multiplatform. It's possible but theres no reason to believe that they are. I wouldn't worry about it too much, if they did charge fees then no one would buy it and the fees would be removed. Hopefully

Unfortunately, like Bale said, the majority of people would end up paying it anyway. Just because of the name, and because they'd have to feel "cool" by sticking with the name brand . . . just like Halo

The sad fact about this is, most of COD's fanbase would pay it.

I'm a big CoD fan, but there's no way in *bleep*ing hell I'd pay for online fees to this series. I refuse to play anything that's a P2P.

    Dear, Activision:

    *bleep* you.

    Sincerely, Gamers Everywhere.

P.S.: Robert Kotick, go die in a fire.

    Jimbo999 Nov 16, 09
Well if it does come to P2P then it better be *bleep*ing good and not cost an arm to play, if it does cost alot and they are screwing with us, then I'll play a different game I think.

Were they gonna do this for Guitar Hero as well (have a subscription to DLC or something)?

    Activision have officially lost it.
