Dead Space was all about being alone, and that really added to the fear. Visceral Games though have posted a job listing for development of an online component for the sequel. Is it a good idea?

If an Electronic Arts job listing is any indication, Dead Space 2 is set to receive a gameplay feature that none of us saw coming -- online multiplayer support. The listing, which calls for the aid of a "Senior Online Level Designer," mentions that the new hire should "be able to work collaboratively with Creative Director and Online Producer to create extremely fun, satisfying and polished multiplayer levels." Those who desire to create droll, unsatisfying and shoddy multiplayer levels should probably look for employment elsewhere.

I could imagine a Necromporph vs human game, lots of cat and mouse.

That would be *bleep*ing awesome, actually. Particularly if it was a Left 4 Dead-type scenario.
Human vs. human would make no sense and be awkward besides.

online? as in a Vs type game, dont see how that could work
co-op, could see it, but it wont work

dead space was all about isolation, sure you had the video holographic, but still, all alone

VS could work like L4D VS. Which is amazingly fun, surprisingly.

Nothing more fun than playing as a zombie and actually not having to worry about the stuff you worry about when your a normal player.

Well there's that...and there could also be a completely separate Co-op set of missions with objectives/survival a la Uncharted 2, it can't fail.

...but for *bleep*'s sake, don't make it entirely private/invites only. Halo 3 ODST and MW2's Spec Ops are almost useless to me.

Job site says multiplayer not co-op though.
Co-op horror is pretty much always doomed to fail in my opinion.

Aside from L4D/L4D2 or RE5? (proclaimed horror titles)

          I can't speak for L4D as a co-op horror experience, but RE5 isn't a horror title to me.

RE5 and Dead Space essentially have the same shooting gameplay, DS just does it better. So if RE5 managed to sell like crazy, I can only imagine what DS's superior gameplay with co-op would do.

First: RE5 only sold well due to RE4.

Second: RE5 is NOT a Horror game.

Third: Dead Space is an action game at it's core that pulls off some horror aspects well.

Fourth: RE5 was not proclaimed in any way. Most of the top if not all the reviewers including fanbase agreed that RE5 was a subpar mediocre action experience.

Tbh if Dead Space 2 isn't going to become a "full" horror game, then co-op would be fine. Or as said above make it separate from the main story.

          1) I'd agree except for the fact that it was universally praised with stellar reviews and strong, lasting sales. If RE4 was the ONLY reason, then it must be one hell of an immortal game.

          2) Of course it's not, but nobody actually gives two shits about what IS horror and what isn't. A developer can make a third person shooter, add monsters and pop up scares and call it horror. While we're at it let's keep that label off any horror oriented game that depends on combat. By that standard, the last good console horror game came out was years ago by the name of Siren which relied on stealth rather than combat. It almost makes me wish I had the Penumbra games.

          3) DS is still horror oriented. The fact that it has great gameplay is more than enough to warrant some sort of multiplayer mode. Which btw it's pretty weird to say that some sort of Versus mode of PvP would actually work instead of co-op and outright bash it.

          "Team deathmatch! Yeah!"
          "Co-op?...that's retarded..."
          Logic???

          4) What reviewers??? You mean IGN or GameSpot or GameInformer? They all gave RE5 an 8 to 10. And the most they complained about was the fact that RE5 was the same as RE4, aside from that they almost glorified the game.

So really, it makes no sense as to why COMPETITIVE is more than ok, while Co-op (which is more fun IMO) gets the boot because it would "ruin the horror atmosphere"? I'm still lost.

1- Well there's that and the amass hype RE5 has been pulling off for the past 5 years since it was announced.

2- Thats just stupid logic right there, are you really saying that RE5 is a horror game? Well by that logic Gears of War is a horror game as I got scared of the locust, L4D is also a horror game as the tank pops out and makes me scream at times. Just by having 1 or 2 thrown in horror elements does not make a horror game a horror game, it makes it an action game with some cheap scares, any real person who knows about the subject can tell you about that. At least Dead Space tried to be scary, RE5 is just an action game. And not even a good one at that.

3- yes Dead space is still horror orientated but that doesn't change the fact that it's just an action game that has a couple of well put horror elements. It tries to do horror but falls a bit flat, in the end the result was a worthwhile experience with some pop-up scares here and there and maybe some genuine true fear from time to time. But not consistently nor pulled off that makes a horror game a horror game.

          4- you got me there.

And I agree with co-op over versus as dead space just doesn't seem like that kind of game.

Either way I'd much rather have DS more horror orientaded and some Dlc that features new levels not just stupid weapons.

          1) Hype usually tends to kill a game, as it's been witnessed MANY times before.

          2) Nope, I'm saying that games designed to scare the player ARE horror. Sure, I don't like it, and I think it's pretty cheap for developers to make the games rely on combat to plow through monsters through most of the game. Despite the fact that RE4/5 completely fail to scare the player, doesn't mean it's not horror. Yeap, just like how RPG's been getting thrown around loosely in other games (COUGHBORDERLANDSCOUGH), so has horror.

Though I will say this, it can call itself horror, I call it a piece of pretentious garbage, I can sleep at night.

          3) Yeah yeah, so it's a shooter. So is every other future horror oriented game, Except DS is probably as good is it's ever going to get for now.

Could be awesome if done well but single player needs to take priority. Would be cool to see some co op though, as long as it didn't turn it into RE5.

    reaver11 Nov 17, 09
Just as long as its done right. But as long as it doesn't affect the single-player in any way (i.e. adding characters that serve no real purpose to the story in any way but are just there just to have multiple characters in multiplayer).

The best part about Dead Space was being alone. They better not *bleep* with it.

I'm kinda hoping for even more isolation this time around.
I'd love to play a horror game where it's literally just you trapped in space (aside from monsters and such, if appropriate). Maybe you don't even make it out...Games where you die at the end...*bleep* yeah.

Yeah. Thats what I loved most about The Thing. They kill the thing at the end, but in turn ultimately end up commiting suicide themselves. Plus the isolation in Antarctica was great (another reason why I say DS was Alien meets The Thing).

But if they'd make a game with maybe 2 or 3 characters max, that'd be great. But still, it was basically complete isolation in this game because Isaac hardly ever made contact with people. It was great.

Best alien bodysnatcher movie of all time really. And one of the best horror movies I've ever seen...ever. Though I don't think the Thing was totally killed, I think an infected dog manages to survive.

Though I've seen more tragic horror movies than that.

Nothing got away, that we know of. Remember all the dogs were killed and the dog thing was roasted.

But if you want to go by the game sequel (good game, bad story), then nothing from that site survived, but there were plenty of the things about

It will be a sad day when this movie is remade again. It has certainly stood the test of time.

Dead Space has the perfect opportunity to make use of the "Predators vs Marines" setup. I really hope we see some lesser used gamemodes in the sequel.

Anyone a lover of the Timesplitters series? The "VIRUS" mode (best in Timesplitters 2), was an aboslutely fantastic mode, and would be awesome in the Dead Space universe. Laststand and Survival modes would be of great benefit also.
