Currently The Playstation Network is free for all users. And it's going to stay like that, so do not get your panties in a bunch. This premium service isn't going to stop you from playing online, but it will add much more content and services that current one does not.

The comment’s from a business meeting at which it was confirmed that subscriptions are on the way to PSN.

“SCE will further increase sales by offering users new entertainment through the combination of hardware, software, peripheral and PlayStation Network,” said the SCE boss.

“Especially in the online area, we are studying the possibility of introducing a subscription model, offering premium content and services, in addition to the current free services.”

Oh man, this better be true. Servers need some funding.

For those just browsing and see this without reading the full story, note "in addition to the current free services." Online play will still be free

There were rumors out earlier this year saying something similar, kind of like a rental service with their online games.

Sounds good to me. I'd subscribe to PSN as long as I knew if I stopped paying I would still be allowed to play online.

It depends on what the "features" are and how they price it.

If any there's no doubt that premium members will be getting dlc earlier, maybe demos, vids etc.

Maybe party chat will be held off for premium users. Other than that I got nothing.

I'd pay if the features are like an enhanced PSN. (eg dedicated servers, XGC, In-game Music online for most titles, etc, etc)

I think if they did that ^^^^^^^^^^^ then a lot of people will buy it as long as Sony doesn't charge like more than $30.00 - $40.00 for it so as to keep it cheap and affordable for most people. I mean the $60.00 or so for live is basically robbing you of a potentially great game, even if it's a yearly fee. Not that this would be any different. It'd just free up a bit more cash for you to spend

The only way I'd not be completely against this idea, is that if there's no features held back from the free PSN users. The only thing Premium accounts should have, is earlier access to things, and things be cheaper for them to buy on the PSN . . . that and maybe---MAYBE better reliability.

But if features like XGC and so forth are only for the Premium Users, I see absolutely NO difference in XBL and I'll have to chalk Sony up to selling out to their competition, when they've always said they wanted to be different. I want variety in my consoles and services, not them to all be the same.

The big difference between Premium PSN and Xbox Live Gold is Free PSN users can still play online. You can't even do that unless you pay for Live. To many people they don't care about chat features and just want to buy things online and play online. For those Free PSN is ideal and they will still have that, for the rest go to Premium PSN and enjoy the luxuries.

AS long as I have everything that is out right now for free, all the other stuff can go premium, I could careless.

Well there have been rumors about this for a while, kind of inevitable really.

This isn't even confirmed? It says they are studying the possibility of it. I think the title of the GG article is misleading.

Sony should go one step further. Introduce a ranking-style choice. Free, you get what you have now, plus firmware updates. $20, you get in game music, bigger friends list, cross game chat. $40 (the max) you get everything you get for 20 plus home universal game launching, exclusive demos and betas, PlayStation magazine subscription, Qore subscription, and Wipeout HD (or any other PSN game) for free. Flower, Fat Princess, etc.

I HIGHLY doubt they will give you free games. This is for more features, not more games.

To promote this, and to get it to have a nice little boost, they should let us have a free game if we're going premium. At the moment, there's not much to gain to get a premium service from PSN since everything about PSN is already great, for free. Another thing that I would like to see is to be able to get BETA releases. It's something that's hard to come by and a paying with a premium service would ensure you to not miss an even like this.

Well, I'm remembering Qore and how those with yearly subscriptions every now and then would get a free game voucher. Of course . . . they were almost always games I already had, or games I wasn't too interested in . . .

If they did this, they'd probably downscale the free aspect of PSN, not add onto it with a premium service ):
