In a two-part interview with the BioShock crew (Ken Levine to be exact), he confirms that BioShock will not have multiplayer, claiming that the single player mode is more than enough to keep us occupied.

I don't know about this, because I buy games for their multiplayer capabilities, and this isn't like an RPG such as Oblivion.

What about multiplayer?

Ken Levine: Not in this game.

Ken Levine: A lot of people ask about it. If we had multiplayer in this game, BioShock would not be the game it is. You only have so many hours in the day.

The list of games that have ground-breaking [gameplay]…whether it’s GTA or, I’m trying to think…even the initial Half-Life multiplayer was kind of a joke. Nobody played the initial Half-Life deathmatch. It wasn’t until there was Counter-Strike.

It’s very hard to do a ground-breaking game and do [good multiplayer] at the same time. We only want to do ground-breaking crap. If we can’t do it ground breaking, I’m not just going to do something like, “Oh, and by the way, there’s a multiplayer mode”…so, guess what, we’re not going to put it on the box.

And to Marketing’s credit, they were on board for that, that it wasn’t just something we were going to put on the box. They could have demanded that, and they didn’t.
