A checklist of symptoms for gaming addiction. Do you struggle to turn off, regardless of how long you've been playing? Do you regularly lose your cool and rage at games or other players? In short, are you an addict?
Probably; according to the general stereotypical views of the media, we all are.
Does your life revolve around videogames? Do you pine for your darling console when you're away from home? If so, then perhaps you have a problem. Doctors in the US are currently campaigning to have videogame addiction recognised as a "formal medical diagnosis", according to an article in the LA Times, and so ensure that gamers afflicted by the habit get the right treatment.
Now, we all know that videogames are addictive - just like TV, gambling or Facebook. The tragic casualties in Korea should be enough to convince anyone of that. But how do you know if you've got a real problem, and not just an overactive evening hobby? Well, here's a few questions you should be asking yourself, some inspired by the LA Times article and some from our own veteran experience.

Surely skipping meals because you're distracted is normal, or at least common?
I've got TONS of other hobbies other than gaming, especially playing Clarinet now.
Sure skipping meals from playing a game will happen. I mean time flys when your playing games or reading books.

Totally.
"Do you regularly lose your cool and rage at games or other players?"
"Have you ever missed a meal because of videogames?"
No, my stomach always wins over the excitement of gaming.
"Do you prefer RPGs, MMOs or RTS games?"
...Not really.
"Do you keep a slops bucket within reaching distance?"
Wtf?
"Do you struggle to find anything else interesting?"
Not really, I like reading as well...so...yeah.
Well there we have it, if the second symptom is serious, then Sports fans should get some serious help, they get too over excited on games they're not even playing.
In all seriousness, the fact that I find nothign else intresting means im addicted to video gaming? Cool? :\ How can this be a "Dissorder" Theres a fine line between addiction, and just being an avid fan of playing video games, its entertainment, who wants to divert themselves from it?
I admit a StarCraft, Final Fantasy VII, and Oblivion addiction.
I don't do it, but I agree with that. Why would a male be more likely do use a bucket than leave his computer/console than a woman? Is it because we're slobs or more likely to be one? What?
my dad is a doctor and he hated video games until I finally got him to play Wii Sports and now he's been all turned around on the subject
I buy the odd game that I think will be good.
