A checklist of symptoms for gaming addiction. Do you struggle to turn off, regardless of how long you've been playing? Do you regularly lose your cool and rage at games or other players? In short, are you an addict?

Probably; according to the general stereotypical views of the media, we all are.

Does your life revolve around videogames? Do you pine for your darling console when you're away from home? If so, then perhaps you have a problem. Doctors in the US are currently campaigning to have videogame addiction recognised as a "formal medical diagnosis", according to an article in the LA Times, and so ensure that gamers afflicted by the habit get the right treatment.

Now, we all know that videogames are addictive - just like TV, gambling or Facebook. The tragic casualties in Korea should be enough to convince anyone of that. But how do you know if you've got a real problem, and not just an overactive evening hobby? Well, here's a few questions you should be asking yourself, some inspired by the LA Times article and some from our own veteran experience.

I have the first four symptoms, but not the latter two, thank god.

Surely skipping meals because you're distracted is normal, or at least common?

I've only got one of the symptoms (Loving RTS games, ESPECIALLY Medieval 2:Total War).

I've got TONS of other hobbies other than gaming, especially playing Clarinet now.

Im sorry but this article is a joke. I mean sure just cause some ppl have some of those issues doesnt mean were addicted. I love gaming cause its awesome. And im going to Try to get into that field. But its my favorite hobby. And How do they know if you have 3 of them your addicted. There is a fine line between addicted and loving Videogames.
Sure skipping meals from playing a game will happen. I mean time flys when your playing games or reading books.

I don't believe they should classify this as some sort of disorder, plenty of people do those things and aren't really addicted to games. I know I do.

you don't need all these ambivalent questions checklisted to know whether you have an addiction problem. You only have a problem with an addiction if it's ruining or imposing into your life in a way that you don't want to.

I've only got symptom 2. The rest don't apply to me. I don't really think I'm addicted to videogames though.

I've never been addicted to normal games at all but I have a tendancy to get way too into MMORPGS, most games I just play when I have nothing else to be doing but with MMORPGS I did started calling off other things so I could play more, they do have this hgue addictive quality.

"Do you struggle to turn off, regardless of how long you've been playing?"

    Totally.

"Do you regularly lose your cool and rage at games or other players?"

    Somtimes I even scare myself.

"Have you ever missed a meal because of videogames?"

No, my stomach always wins over the excitement of gaming.

"Do you prefer RPGs, MMOs or RTS games?"

    ...Not really.

"Do you keep a slops bucket within reaching distance?"

    Wtf?

"Do you struggle to find anything else interesting?"

Not really, I like reading as well...so...yeah.

Well there we have it, if the second symptom is serious, then Sports fans should get some serious help, they get too over excited on games they're not even playing.

^^ made me lol about sports fans.

In all seriousness, the fact that I find nothign else intresting means im addicted to video gaming? Cool? :\ How can this be a "Dissorder" Theres a fine line between addiction, and just being an avid fan of playing video games, its entertainment, who wants to divert themselves from it?

    I lol'd about the sports fans too. Truly, sports addiction might be more dangerous than gaming addiction :{

I have had a few of these symptoms...like when games like MGS3 and FFVII and FVIII were released...played them for hours without stopping. But now, no game does that for me. The only real symptom up there that I can relate to is the MMO/RTS one. I've played Age of Empires 2, the Warcraft series (not WoW), Rise of Nations, and other RTS' for countless amount of hours.

I used to be back when I was out of school and all I did was play Halo 2 for like 10 hours a day. I'd play till 5 AM, wake up around 2 or 3, and play again. Now that I've actually got priorities in my life, I haven't play a video game consistently in over three months.

I only answered yes to two of them. I don't play video games as much as I did last year. I can easily turn the game off if I need to.

Thankfully I now don't have any of these symptoms, but a few years ago I was in a worse state. I play a healthy mix of sports and video games, and hope to continue to do so.

If you read articles about games and game consoles on GameGrep, you probably are an addict.

I admit a StarCraft, Final Fantasy VII, and Oblivion addiction.

    quote
But the law of inevitability suggests that at least one person (most likely male) has opted to use a bucket rather than tear themselves away from a game.
I don't do it, but I agree with that. Why would a male be more likely do use a bucket than leave his computer/console than a woman? Is it because we're slobs or more likely to be one? What?

I don't have any symptoms, kind of odd I don't seeing, as I play games most of my time. If I have something better to do then I do it.

I used to be able to binge on games and lose my sense of time and space and stay up all night. But somehow I can't do that anymore, even when I want to. Is it age? Just can't get that absorbed into them anymore, though I miss it lots when I'm at school, away from games. Maybe it's just a next-gen i need.

Meh, I am at times, but I wouldn't say I'm actually addicted at all. I mean I hardly ever buy games. I just like talking about them I guess.

I buy the odd game that I think will be good.
