If Australian gamers really want to have their games rated and approved, then they need to get off their collective backsides now, and take this golden opportunity to have their say via a public discussion paper that will be submitted to the Federal Government.

If you don't, and more games get banned, then those gamers who did nothing will have no one to blame other than themselves.

Head over to OXCGn, find out what games have been banned over the time, how some have been passed unchanged, and how you can have this worked out by being involved. . . . or will you wait for someone else to do it for you?

After 18 months of waiting, Brendan O’Connor, Federal Minister for Home Affairs, has finally released the discussion paper for R18+ classification. The discussion paper and the submission template are both available for download here.

While neither he nor the Government had formed a view on whether the Classification Scheme should include an R18+ classification for computer games, Mr O’Connor encourages “everyone with an interest in this issue to contribute to the discussion so the Government can ensure all community views are considered.”

Submissions for the discussion paper close on 28 February, 2010.

The discussion paper outlines arguments FOR and AGAINST the introduction of an R18+ rating for video games in Australia.

After seeing yet another game refused classification and now being reviewed (Aliens Vs. Predator) gamers should be able to see that this issue is going to affect more and more titles.

Rebellion has previously stated it will not release a toned-down altered less violent version of Aliens vs. Predator in Australia if the appeal fails on Friday (December 18 2009).

OXCGN encourages gamers to download the discussion paper and politely have your say in the hope that something will be done soon.

Gamers and parents this is your chance to make a difference!

I bet Michael Atkinson imposed the 250 word limit for comments.

I'm starting to notice a pattern in those descriptions XboxOZ360, how many times are you going to use the line "Get off your asses or its your own fault."

Well he can say it all he wants. He's either not Australian and doesn't know that doing something is as they say easier said than done.Or he is an Australian and he has no idea how hard it is.Numerous people have sent well writen letters to MA and 99% of them don't get replies.

Not to mention numerous other things have and are being done by the average joe to try and get an R18+ rating.Of course news or sites aren't going to get a load of people to care about some person that has no higher power doing something minor but very thoughtful. What is everyone going to care about in headlines, *insert famous person* dies, 20 people killed, or guy fromn down the street got a petition in *insert town* to rally for an 18+ rating for video games? My guess is the first 2 things I mentioned.

Not too mention there are people who could get a shit load more done, that do a shit load more than us standard people and have been doing it for YEARS and guess what it hasnt changed a damn thing.

So it's very easy for someone to sit on their arse in front of a computer and tell everyone else to do something about it.But this isn't a perfect world where needed change can get done with as much ease as adding 1+1.

As amatter of fact, every member of the OXCGN team is submitting something to this current request, plus we have interviewed, had discussion, ran parental polls in game stores all based on this very subject over the last 2 years.

So yes, we DO DO something other than sit on our arses in front of a computer. And being of an olderage, I've been involved in many a government petition in the past, and will continue to do so in the future.

If we all took the attitude, which is typical ly Australian by the way, of it doesn't matter if I do something r not, as nothing will change. or - oh I tried once, sent letter few times, but nothing happened, so why waste the time . . then those that does are caving into exactly what most government bodies want you to do, apathy.

    Australia is rank with it.

If this was happening in the US, UK or anywhere else for that matter, the locals would be up in arms (not literally) and making their presence known on radio, major TV shows, talk-back shows etc etc etc.

There are a few dedicated individuals who are making a difference, and we support them, bydoing what we can. We run a banner on every post , on the main site, have run several articles, informed many of the games that have been banned, and attend everything where possible.

What have you done lately . .Yes, I am Australian, and proud of it, but some sections of the community make me feel sad being an Australian at times.

And you'll find our item wasn't simply a re-write of a press release, or the submission of the press release. Our main editor who is a father of 3 wrote the item because he wanted to voice his opinion about the matter, and show his support.

We ALL need to be doing something, no matter how small it might be, every single little piece done helps the overall picture. Without each person doing their little bit, NOTHING will be achieved.

Which is exactly what Mr Atkinson is hoping will happen, as he actually does have a handle on how "gamers" behave - they are unlike most hobbiest or groups. They tend to do nothing when it comes to joining forces, and he's hoping this will be the case here, yet again.

So no matter what it is, how small it is, do it, or we all will be back in the dark ages.

What have we done, or doing, Well right now we are compiling a complete list of ALL games since 2002 that have been given the MA15+ rating, and then showing the "same Game" rated on the ESRB and PEGI and Great Britan's BBC ranking systems.

This is an enormous task to say the least, and it ideally will be submitted along with all our teams submissions before the closing date. The idea is to ideally show the number of games already passed through on MA15+ that had 18+ ratings overseas, yet were rated much lower here, and were made readily available to 'minors' and thus make a mockery of the "we need to protect the children" comment Mr Atkinson continues to make.

If he was really sincere about the matter, he'd allow the introduction (or actual use of an existing rating) to move those games that should have the 18+ rating into the right catergory, so that adults monitoring their children, or shop owners that sell goods had a clear, visual guide that some of the games are not suitable for young Johnny/Betty.

This task will take us at least a month of combined work . . what are you doing . . . ?

You might consider this ironic but I'm not even going to reply to that. The amount of blind assumptions and stereotyped nonsense in that post is just ridiculous.

so sittingback and saying nothing will change, and doing nothing because - well - it's not really going to make a difference is more important than making a stand .. great.

Well then, I suppose you'll be equally happy to know that Steven Conroy is right at this very moment pushing the bill for Online Censorhip of all Aust ISP's BEFORE CHRISTMAS so that it is passed before Cabinet closes until the first quarter of 2010, too late for the public to do anything about it.

I suppose if we all sit back and do nothing on that as well, things will change - not bloody likely mate.

As gamers and consumers, and as parents we ALL need to stand up, no matter what our personal differences might be.

Put aside our differences in whatever form that might be, and be vocal about how a government is hell bent on turning Australia into a pre 1800's world once again.

If you're from Australia then you'd understand, if not, then I suppose it would be difficult to grasp just how absurd these changes are, or the fact we have the worst ratings system in the world, and almost all publishers thiink we are a joke. I know, I've spoken to many on the QT while they have been here promoting their own 18+ games under our MA15+ banner.

As one leading studio development head said while here over a "quite drink" . . "If I was a father here under these rules, my kids just wouldn't see these games...... I make these games for "adults' to play, not my kids.....How do you guys over here justify selling my 18+ game to your 15 yr old, or even younger in some cases... it's beyond me...."

That is it in a nutshell basically.

And the fact that now, with Steve Conroy's delightful help, games that have been RC'd, will NOT be able to be seen on the sites you may have had access before, and been able to import them, as those sites will be 'filtered' under the new ISP Filtering System he is planning to introduce, even after a huge public outcry, he's not listening to the Priotect the Chilrden groups that say the sytem is completely flawed, aor the University studies conducted with the various ISP that show the system os basically broken . .no, he, like Atkinson will do as they please, not even the PM can have a say above them and rule changes as the US President could in his country.

These two men will put Australia back 200 years, when we should be moving forward.

Thank god they were not around when the motor vehicle industry was starting in Aust in the early 20'th century (1912 etc), we wouldn't have a motor car industry at all.

Come on guys, are we on the same side here, or opposing sides of the fence?

We all must do our bit . . .
