In a recent interview, Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura revealed that FFXIII's graphics engine has been updated, allowing his team to make Final Fantasy Versus XIII's real-time graphics identical to its CGI cutscenes.

Director Tetsuya Nomura has given details in the latest Famitsu magazine, of how Final Fantasy Versus XIII’s graphics engine has been updated: namely to ensure cut-scene CGI and gameplay are identical. Yummy indeed. He also claims the game is set to be the “dark” Final Fantasy people have been waiting for.

Hopefully this isn't a bunch of crap and does set a new standard for immersion and all that. Although some games are doing a pretty good job already...
Eventually realtime will be able to look "good enough" to not really need CGI in games anymore but pre-rendered CGI will always look better. It just simply will.
