Consulting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers has released a report in which it claims that the booming videogames market will surpass the music industry in spending during 2008, as the games industry continues to become one of the largest markets in entertainment.

"Video gaming is one of the most exciting stories in terms of pure growth numbers," said Marcel Fenez of PwC, who predict the worldwide gaming market will be worth $48.9 billion by the year 2011.

I'm more surprised that videogames aren't already a bigger market, tbh.

I too am surprised that more music sells than Video games. A lot of people download Music illegally and there is a lot of interest in video games.

I thought that video games where already selling more since it does cost more to purchase a video game than music.

I suspect this is in huge part a thanks to NINTENDO for their innovative approach to targeting new audiences, even if they didn't necessarily buy a system, it at least got a lot of people takling about it and aware or even interested in it. I'm sure more and more non-gamers will begin to get into gaming.

I'm finding it more common now to go over to friend's houses and play games with boys And girls together. It used to be the girls just sneer at us while we play, and they'd gossip at the other end of the room. Now we laugh together and can even talk about which games we're waiting to play and why katamari is so awesome

I think Nintendo really started this trend quite successfully with the DS, and the Wii just cemented their position. I've never seen so much buzz from females about gaming

But rather than just credit Nintendo we should also credit the fact that games today are so much more impressive, more immersive, and more graphically appealing to more people. Don't forget also that larger tv's are now common in households, which makes gaming even more enjoyable.

Gaming has almost became a family activity, mostly due to the Wii and the DS, so I'm also quite surprised that video games haven't out sold Music sales already.
I think someone predicted that by 2010, 1 in 4 households in Japan will own a Wii - Or something along those lines ^^
