Nintendo has announced exclusive unique downloadable content for the Wii. It's something that isn't a channel or a Virtual Console game. Rather, it'll have games of all kinds, even from independent developers.

Unlike the vintage games already being offered for legacy systems (i.e. Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis and TurboGrafx 16) through the Virtual Console, these games will be built specifically for the Wii and sold via the Wii Shop Channel for Wii Points currency, much like the Xbox 360- and Playstation 3-specific games being sold on Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network.

Is this like new games or old playable games?

You know what would be awesome is if they have a freeware Homebrew channel where people can share their own free home made games.

Wiiware will be all original content, games that are developed specifically for Wii. Virtual Console will still be the place for old games.

I wonder why they wouldn't announce something like this at E3? Great news anyway.

Well, last year, we got the name of the Wii itself before E3, then they showed off all the games at the event. They could be doing the same here: announce the service before hand, then show the content at E3.

This is definitely going to be great. I figured the Wii would do this pretty soon.

Sounds good. We can definitely get some fun and original pick-up and play titles with this. It's about time! Hopefully they all won't be like revised versions of games like Wii Play or Wii Sports though.

Sounds good to me, I'd definitely look into it. Just like buying games at the store, except not...and no discs either! More convenient, I guess. Less chance of the games getting damaged in some way.
