Modern Warfare 2, a game that asks players to walk through an airport and take part in a terrorist attack, is the best selling game of the year. Actually, it's the biggest multimedia launch of all time. That's not damning of the game by any means, but seriously, players are slaughtering civilians, and it had no problem making it onto the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Meanwhile, while nudity is allowed, anything even remotely explicit garners the game an AO rating, which means the only outlet is a PC release. While it's possible to argue against the ESRB for considering explicit violence more acceptable than sex acts, it's more of a commentary on American society, and isn't the point of this article. What is worth discussing, is if there will ever be a time where the "erotic" game genre will ever become worthwhile for developers.
This isn't the case in every market. Japan, when compared to America, has a bustling erotic game market, but it's also focused more on the PC than consoles thanks to the same strict rules. Sadly, the only games that stand out from Japanese developers are the ones that ignite controversy, and it's hard for erotic games to ever gain footing when people automatically think Rapelay or Battle Raper when they think of the genre.
