A report on the announcement that a piece of Planet Calypso's virtual real estate has been purchased at auction for $330,000, making it the most expensive virtual object ever.

First Planet Company, developer and publisher of the largest real cash economy Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG), announced today the results of the public auction of the Crystal Palace Space Station. The winning bidder acquired the property for a record-breaking $330,000.00 USD (approx. £205,627.54 UK Sterling). The previous record was confirmed in the Guinness World Records book in 2008. It featured another piece of property in the Planet Calypso game bought for $100,000 USD as "The Most Expensive Virtual Object."

Wow, that's insane. I mean, I thought it was crazy for people to pay for in-game gold and powerleveling, but this is a whole 'nother level. I don't understand how someone could fork over that amount of cash for a piece of virtual property. I guess, if he ever wanted to sell it though, then he'd get a fair chunk of it back, but really... How long can you play the same game, even if it is an MMORPG?

I know I'm not really one to talk since I'm on my 6th year of World of Warcraft, but I can see the novelty wearing off in another 5 - 8 years.
