Square Enix's president, Yoichi Wada, recently revealed that he believes the reason many Western games don't sell well in Japan isn't because of customer prejudice, but more to do with Japanese retailers who are prejudiced towards foreign titles...

Square bossman Yoichi Wada has told Edge that western games don’t do well in Japan, and it has less to do with the consumer and more to do with retail outlets that are prejudiced towards “overseas titles”.

“Well, actually, I’ve found the person that is prejudiced is actually the retailer and not the actual players,” he said. “The retailers have a prejudice against overseas titles, and they won’t procure them. But something like Batman: Arkham Asylum, for example, is something that is very like the Japanese taste in games, in fact it caters to very much the Japanese taste.

“Arkham Asylum is like the best aspects of Metal Gear Solid, but evolved”.

I haven't actually had chance to play AA yet, but is that really an accurate statement?

not at all. AA is decent as a stealth game, but it's nowhere near as sophisticated as MGS in that respect.

It's a great exaggeration, but to a point yeah, since the bad guys play on what you do. Bare in mind he's only talking about the stealth aspects of the game though; not the entirety... or, at least, I *bleep*ing hope so

Doesn't the whole Wada statement pretty much sum up Japanese gamers in general. I mean even now they snub the Xbox 360 because it's American.
