Sony Computer Entertainment America's Andrew Wilson filed the claim for previously unpaid overtime in February 2005. Representing a group of "Image Production Employees" - including animators, artists, modellers, visual effects and lighting specialists - who worked at the company between February 2001 and September 2007.

Deal subject to approval

Sony Computer Entertainment America has agreed to pay a USD 8.5 million settlement to employees who claim they are owed unpaid overtime.

    What do you mean? You can still make great games. The pay has nothing to do with the quality or greatness of games.

    If the people who actually work on the games at ground level feel taken advantage of, because they're not being paid for the hours they put in, they probably won't put as much effort into their jobs as they would otherwise. They'll feel more justified in slacking off or cutting corners, which will result in games of lesser quality than could have been achieved otherwise, and may put back a release date if too many people do it.
