A report on the announcement that Halo 3 has been deemed 2009's most popular title on Xbox LIVE, and Battlefield 1943 takes the crown for the best-selling Xbox LIVE Arcade release.

Deciding the victor in terms of unique users that have logged-on to play online, Halo 3 remains the most popular Xbox LIVE title of the 2009 calendar year. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 take second and third place respectively, while Call of Duty: World at War and Gears of War 2 manages to round-out the top five. Resident Evil 5, however, has been split into two entries – that of the North American and European release, and that of the Japanese title under it’s eastern name, BioHazard 5.

I refuse to believe that MW2 was more popular in just over a month than Gears of War 2 was throughout all of 2009. Bs.

It's ordered by the amount of unique users who have played the game. I'm sure MW2 by far surpassed Gears of War 2 in sales, so it only make sense that there's more unique users.

If they ordered it by the total amount of hours combined by it's users, I'm sure Gears 2 would be higher up. Unique users works well for weekly comparisons, which is what majornelson.com normally does, but it's pretty misleading for an annual report.

Thanks for clearing that up, I can agree with that.
