If there was any doubt that Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was a main entry in the MGS series, cast it away right now.
In a recent interview with Official Playstation Magazine, Hideo Kojima revealed that Peace Walker would have been Metal Gear Solid 5 if it wasn't on the PSP.
According to Kojima: "It's not a side story or a spin-off. It's not like Portable Ops or Acid. I am deeply involved and this is the next Metal Gear."

OPM: You’ve described Peace Walker as "the MGS5 inside me". What does that mean, and what does that make MGS Rising?

HK: Since it is on PSP, I did not officially number it. But the game design, story, number of staff and budget-you can say that this is a big project. It would’ve been number 5. It’s not a side story or a spin-off. It’s not like Portable Ops or Acid. I am deeply involved and this is the next Metal Gear.

I think at E3 he said the same thing, about Peace Walker being the resolution he wanted. It's not secret he didn't like 3 or 4.

I think he just said he wished he would have had more room on Blu-Ray to make 4 the way he wanted.

Was sitting in the first row at Sony's conference. Pretty sure he said Peace Walker was the true ending of MGS. Could just be a marketing statement though, who knows.
