Does this mean Reggie was right about outselling MW2?

No, it does not. Not even close, really.

Actually it is close. Though it depends on how total sales are calculated. But given the trajectories of both games, NSMB is bound to outsell MW2.

...What the hell do you mean "it depends on how total sales are calculated"? Total sales are total sales, simple as that.

Does anyone actually have the numbers? I'm genuinely curious.

One of my friends said he read an article that did state it outsold MW2. I think it was referring to the sales on the PS3 and 360 only though.

Based on Activision's "Modern Warfare 2 made $1 billion" announcement, the game has sold an estimated 15 million copies.

According to this news article, NSMBWii is at 10.5 million.

Cod MW2 sold 7 million on its first day. You do the math.

As of December 2009 NPD (meaning, US sales, as that was what he was referring to initially when he made the bet):

      MW2 360 > NSMBWii > MW2 PS3

He also said give him until January NPD. If you'd like I can go dig up the actual numbers, but for now this should suffice.

Go for it. Would be pretty cool to get some figures on this stuff. The only one I know is that Codmw2 made 1 billion in January(total sales).

          Nov 2009 + Dec 2009 = Total

          MW2 360: 4.20M + 1.63M = 5.83M
          NSMBWii: 1.39M + 2.82M = 4.21M
          MW2 PS3: 1.87M + 1.12M = 2.99M

I guess one thing to consider with MW2 is piracy. As far as I'm aware, there have been well over 2 and a half million downloads of the game on bit torrent sites, and there are sure to have been more with irc clients, etc.

That's not sold copies though. Even if several million people have the game and it's pirated, and only ten thousand have actually bought the game, then New Super Mario Bros still outsold it.

No shit dude, I think I said that already. Total sales are total sales, but you have to consider the fact that if piracy weren't such an issue these days there would be a lot more copies of MW2 actually sold than there currently are.

Wasn't NSMBWii the most highly pirated game on the wii and like the second most highly pirated game of the year?

There's a difference of over 3 million between the two.

Worrying about piracy at all when comparing sales totals is a fool's errand. There's no guarantee that any of those pirated copies would have been a sale (let's face it, probably 1-2% of the pirates would have bought MW2 otherwise), so including it in the discussion is pointless.

Plus, Maio games have a much longer tail than COD games do. NSMBWii will likely put up another 3 mil next December while Activision is busy pushing COD7.
