Sources close to developer Namco Bandai say that due to problems porting the upcoming Beautiful Katamari to Sony PlayStation 3 and the lack luster sales of the system so far, the PS3 project has been quietly canceled and the development team refocused to bringing the game to Nintendo Wii.

Edit: Rumor confirmed in the latest issue of Famitsu

Namco Bandai revealed earlier this year that it was developing the next-generation Katamari Damacy sequel, Beautiful Katamari, for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Up until recently, the developer continued to work on both versions of the project. However, sources close to Namco Bandai tell IGN that the studio ran into some trouble with the port of the game to PlayStation 3 and these issues, coupled with the stalled sales of the system, have led to the project's quiet cancellation. Looking to better-than-expected sales of Wii, the company has, say insiders, re-shifted resources to ready a Wii build of Beautiful Katamari instead. Given that the title cannot be ported from Xbox 360, the game is being re-concepted for Wii.

Are we forgetting which has the bigger userbase? Or is Blu-Ray going to your head? *googly eyes* 8D

I am with Guticb, That doesn't make sense. Canceling a game because the system doesn't sell. Making a game actually sells for a profit unlike the system which sells at a loss. Just doesn't fit.

SONY! SUBSIDIZE Namco to help them release this on the PS3!! It will help you get your systems sold!
What the heck is katamari doing rolling into the wrong places? Wii has more people to pick up, but the PS3 is heavier! It will make for better stars! Come back to Sony and we can all be friends, or else we won't *heart* katamari anymore. HMPH.

maybe i'll just get a wii, damn it

Even if it doesn't stay on PS3, I horribly doubt Katamari would've given any drastic results in the PS3's sales.

So possibly another Wii game, is it likely to be good? I have never heard of the tittle.

The game was practically tapped dry with its two sequels. It's more likely to not do so well. It's very hard to follow Katamari up with anything new.

God sometimes you wonder what companies think. I mean if they want to increase sales, they have to help. They can't just sit back and hope the sales will increase by themselves.

Well actually the Wii is the cheapest to make for and has the ability to make games with new concepts, which will sale for their refreshed side, as well as the ability to have in depth input, furthermore Nintendo may have done what they did with the DS and made it from the developers stand point, not to mention the new audiences which can be reached.

So since the Wii has the potential for the largest market, the cheapest game creation costs, due to it being weaker, the chance to create games based on fresher concepts which have the potential to score just as big review wise as the more powerful ones, the Wii could be the most effective for them, should they do this.

Katamari is way too niche to help the PS3.

Even so, it seems silly to pull any game nearing completion, even if it does happen fairly often. I wonder what problems they encountered to cause this decision, if it is even true.

It's a shame that they've completely canned the PS3 version in favour of a Wii version. Why not just release it on both platforms, if it is almost completed for PS3?
