After over 6 years of revolutionizing online gaming, the original XBOX will retire from XBOX Live. On April 15, 2010, all games on the original XBOX will be offline. One of the speculated reasons for the decision was to free XBOX Live from what some games on the original XBOX are preventing from improving, such as expanding the friends list.

I wanted to let you know that on April 15, 2010 Microsoft will discontinue Xbox LIVE service for original Xbox consoles and games, including Xbox 1 games playable on Xbox 360. Our first step in this process will be to turn off auto-renewals for those members who only use Xbox LIVE on a v1 Xbox. While I can't comment on the specifics, this change will allow us to continue evolving the LIVE service with new features and experiences that fully harness the power of Xbox 360 and the Xbox LIVE community. We did not make this decision lightly, but after careful consideration and review we realize that this decision will allow us unprecedented flexibility for future features.

It's a shame that they have to stop Halo 2 because from what I heard (Before and within this article) it still has a fair number of players. However I do think that being able to have more than 100 people on the FL will be cool if they add it, I'm getting pretty close to filling it.

I guess so, to free up server space.

They should just cut online to everything but the top 3 games.

It's mostly so they can open up aspects of Live that were inhibited by the original Xbox; Having more than 100 friends and clan support, for example.

However, I do think that it's real shitty of them for doing that; these people are paying customers to Live, $8 to $5 a month. And assuming that they've been paying since before the launch of 360, that's $200.

Pretty convenient of them doing it around tax-return time as well

It sucks for them, but it has to be done. Now Live can move forward.

Yeah there's only an average of less than a thousand people on XBOX Live now. So it's really not a big deal anymore. But there's always XBConnect still. That's it.

good they are moving on as far as the console, but why stop allowing games like Halo 2 from being played online? whats wrong with letting it still be played on 360?

That's one of the things constraining XBOX Live from improving as far as friends list and messaging. Halo 2 is one of the games preventing XBOX Live from getting an updated quantity for friends lists. And the whole idea of XBL-wide clans was scrapped.

THe games can still be played. Just not on XBOX Live. But with a LAN cable you can still use XBConnect.

Why does Microsoft enjoy screwing over its loyalists?

Could you imagine if North Korea decided that it would re-join with South Korea and dumped all its Social loyalists? Oh, the humanity.

Most of their "loyalists" have moved onto the X360. C'mon, let's be rational here.

Aw, that's sad for everyone still using an Xbox.

Just take comfort that this bound to happen sooner or later. X3

I hope they at least release arcade versions of some of the games. An updated version of Halo: CE that actually has online multiplayer would be cool. Then update Halo 2 as well to be compatible with whatever was holding Xbox Live back. I'm sure they would make a killing off of it, even if it costs them a bit of development money.

Also, along with the two Halo games, Star Wars: Battlefront 2, Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, the Rainbow Six games that had multiplayer, and Counter-Strike.

Yeah that's probably what they'll do next. They actually should have been doing that from the beginning. Just remake classic XBOX games to full XBOX360 games with achievements, current-gen graphics.
