PS3 has Football Troubles

skittles07 | July 01, 2007 | News | Playstation 2 XBOX 360
Football is easily the best selling sports video game. The PS3 is having trouble keeping up with competitors on these Football games. The XBOX 360 versions of Madden 08, All-Pro Football 2K8, and NCAA Football 08 are running at 60 frames per second where the PS3 editions run at 30 frames per second. The 360 games are much faster and will run smoother.
They may call baseball America's pastime, but in the world of videogames, that honor easily belongs to football. No other sport has racked up software sales quite like the pigskin offerings, and no other sport has been so vital to the success (PlayStation 2 having Madden since Day 1) and failure (Dreamcast never got it) of hardware. The importance of this genre is just as relevant today, yet it seems Sony's console ain't sittin' so pretty this time around.

We have confirmed the Xbox 360 versions of Madden NFL 08 (August), All-Pro Football 2K8 (July), and NCAA Football 08 (July) will run at 60 frames per second, whereas the PS3 editions are locked at just 30fps. In the simplest of terms, this means that the 360 versions will run smoother and faster, and you'll have an easier time noticing subtle animations.

It's not a problem with the PS3 hardware. Could be that the game designers haven't figured out the right way to program software for the console. Or it could be the PS3 is not as good as Sony wants us to think.

Just a case of EA making the game on the Xbox 360 and giving the Playstation 3 a half assed port.

Its a case of developers building it for 360 first and doing a half assed job porting it.

I believe it was Hideo Kojima himself that told developers to quit being morons, make a game on PS3 first, THEN port it in order to get good performance on both systems.

I hope EA and other companies making these football games learn how to make the games run just as smoothly on the PS3 as they do on the XBOX 360 since I'm getting a PS3 and love football games.

Thing is 30FPS is good enough it would be a bitch in a shooter though sports there will only be 21 players on the field at a time, there will only ever be one ball, the action will never pick up over that... I mean there is no reason why 30FPS isn't enough i mean the human eye cannot tell the difference between anything over 25FPS so 30FPS for a sports game is more than enough, though that still doesn't make it acceptable for developers to develop solely on the inferior system expecting it to port up to the better system at the same quality, thats just lazy the PS3 is more complex though the rewards for taking a few more days to complete are astonishing.

This makes an excuse for all the lazy developers. Why can't you even make a game with 60 FPS.

It only makes sense that the PS3 would get the half-assed port based on the fact that most of the "official" Madden tournaments are used on the Xbox, and now 360 system so I don't see how this really comes as much of a shock. Still unfortunate however.
