Mario Party 8 hits new sales record for series

Wolfwood | July 02, 2007 | News | Wii
Say what you will of the continued milking of Mario Party, but new games in the franchise still manage to sell. In fact, Nintendo reveals that Mario Party 8 for the Wii is the fastest selling title in the series yet. Perhaps the EIGHTH incarnation of Mario Party got lucky this time because it was the first in the series to hit the Wii.
As the first Mario Party game created exclusively for Wii, this new installment has sold more than 550,000 copies in the United States during the weeks following its May 29 launch.

"The overwhelming response not only reminds us how much fans absolutely love the Mario Party franchise but also proves the unmatched ability of the Wii system to attract new players," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Wii users are keeping the Mario Party going strong."

Argh. I know people who buy every Mario Party game, just because of the name. These games would be a lot better if they only came out once per generation, not once a year.

I have also heard this one is not good, that it is obviously a GC game with waggle controls slapped on. Nintendo, please give us a good Mario Party again!

Fastest selling in the series? That is pretty good. I think one reason why the game is doing so well is because of how so many would like to try out the controls with the remote. Plus alot of people love the series.

Not really surprising, considering it's the first Mario Party for the Wii. It's also the most innovative one yet.

Hmm nice to hear that it isn't a dying game series at least, unlike many over-used game series. The Wii game really must be innovative and fun to play with these great sale numbers.

Personally, I like MP4 best. 8 just doesn't compare to it's previous ones, but like rinkydink said, the fact that it's on the Wii really gives it better recognition.

I'm not surprised, and the game looks awesome too. I should definitely pick it up when I get the chance because it looks like a really good game. The series shouldn't be dead yet, even though we are in the 8th of the series. Hope they keep this up!

I am surprised and not at the same time. This is not that great of a game/version. It's not as fun as the other ones but using the Wii-mote make it it more real feeling. I agree with all of you.

I was unaware of the 8th in the series to have been released!!! Been a while since I've played the mini game mayhem, number 6 the last I think. But now with the franchise heading over to the Wii I think I might have to delve back into the joyfullness and purchase this game.

Great news about the statistics too.
