Sony and Microsoft have both announced the total amount of users on their system. Playstation network has seen a %155 increase and has a total of 40 million users. Xbox Live is currently at 23 million users. Take note though, that many PS3 owners have multiple accounts for different regions.

Both Sony and Microsoft have revealed the numbers behind their console online services, with both services growing significantly over the year.

To be fair, most of those would be double accounts made to reset scores or get different regional content.

    Still impressive though

Let's be honest, how many of those 40m or 23m are used every day or so?

About 1/5 are probably secondary accounts or were used once and never again.

Well for the 360's numbers, I doubt hardly any of those were secondary accounts. Those are all Gold subscribers, so I doubt they pay to just let their account sit there. I'm sure there's a small percentage of people who may pay for multiple accounts, but those numbers still won't be anywhere as inflated as PSN's. Especially considering the PS3 has only sold around 30 million consoles the last I heard, and yet they have 40 million users.

I have 3 or 4 accounts that have access to PSN.

Whilst Bale Fire and ShadowGuard are both right, remember that there's still quite a lot of people on XBL who have multiple accounts. Lots of people do it just so they can keep getting Live for free, to get achievements or as a back-up in-case their hacked account gets banned - among lots of other reasons.

Live only gives you the free month for about 2 or 3 accounts before not allowing it per console.

I have three or four accounts on PSN. One on Live.

And they shouldn't count PSP accounts until infrastructure play is standard for multiplayer games.

I've heard the 23 million on live is just Live accounts, not Gold; too bad the article doesn't source the claim.

And yeah, PSN goes with multiple devices; and easily makes multiple accounts, so it certainly makes sense.
