Final Fantasy XIII's director Motomu Toriyama recently responded to the game's disappointing review scores, saying that "We think many reviewers are looking at Final Fantasy XIII from a western point of view."

Producer Yoshinori Kitase told CVG sister mag Xbox World 360: "We try not to listen to the critics too much. Most of the criticisms have come because the first half of the game is very linear.

"But we've got a story to tell, and it's important the player can engage with the characters and the world they inhabit before letting them loose..."

The game's director Motomu Toriyama added: "We think many reviewers are looking at Final Fantasy XIII from a western point of view. When you look at most Western RPGs, they just dump you in a big open world, and let you do whatever you like... [It] becomes very difficult to tell a compelling story when you're given that much freedom."

    Lol, I thought this was some sort of weird in-game boss thing (like a stunt/ad thing) for some reason XD

    Boss =/= in-game boss I guess XD

    When a game has a good story to tell linearity becomes such a minor problem. In most cases having a non-linear game is only important when the storyline is just an excuse for the game to exist to begin with.

    The thing is, when a game is good and it's linear, nobody cares, when a game is bad and linear, then you start to notice it. So it's all relative.

    I'm not going to sit here and act like every game has to be sandboxy or something. I hate this new mentality that all games have to play the same. Like all of a sudden every third person shooter has to play like Resident Evil 4. Which is fine, it's a great control scheme, but hey, there are other ways to do good third person shooters. Or that every game needs moral choices.

    I do not want all my games to play the same.

    I do not really care about a linear storyline as long as the characters are developed and the story is good. I play games for the story and when players have the choice to do different stuff and change the story, the characters are not very well developed.

    So what I am saying is, linear stories do not make a bad game, its character development or lack thereof (FF12) that determines the quality. Battle system is also something that can help, but for FF games, its all about how good the story is... I want FF stories to be linear.

    The review scores are bad because Final Fantasy XIII happens to be very similiar to it's XII ancestors.

      I've played XIII and I would say there's very little similar to XII that isn't just similar to EVERY FF game.

    dragon age says "hi".

    also lol @ the notion of any of the final fantasy story lines being "compelling".
