Way back in 2008, it was revealed that Final Fantasy Versus XIII would be a more "traditional" Final Fantasy game and would even have a world map of some sort. But what sort of world map? Well, Square Enix's Tetuya Nomura recently revealed that its set-up will resemble the world map of a certain previous FF game.

[Discuss in Final Fantasy Versus XIII forum]

According to the interview, the world map in the upcoming game has changed. Originally, a miniature version of Noctics would have run around the world map. Because it looked a little bit odd, however, Square Enix decided to change it to resemble another Final Fantasy title (Famitsu blocked the number off).

If I wanted to play a "traditional" Final Fantasy, I'd go play one of the old ones. And if it were anyone other than Nomura, everyone else would say the same thing. It's sad that just because it's him, it'll be acceptable to use outdated systems.

I was looking forward to Versus XIII more than FFXIII from the beginning.

Same here, while I'm super excited about FFXIII and the changes it brings, it looks fantastic. I was always more interested in FFvXIII. It's awesome to hear it has a world map.

Sorry but I love the idea of a more traditional FF.Just stating that VsXIII will have a world map makes me more interested in that than FFXIII.

It has NOTHING to do with WHO said it.I don't give a damn about him or any other games developer, I want what I want and won't want something just because some great developer says that's what he's giving us.

As a matter of a fact I'm actually sick of new systems and am glad to go back to systems of games from a time when I enjoyed video games a million times more than I do now.

Yes new sytems are great but sometimes it's more fun to go back to 'basics'.

A "traditional" FF sounds like a breath of fresh air in comparison to the experiments Squeenix have attempted in the last few years.

A traditional Final Fantasy sounds like good news to me! I miss the over-world a great deal and it'd be great shame if Nomura-san decided to go back to the straight line approach we've had since X.

It's funny that I agree with you even though FFX is my favourite FF of all time.

I'm a bit confused, does anyone have any idea what FF title they're talking about in this article? The one where the title was left off?

I can't think of any FF game that had a true world map for you to explore other than the obvious ones BT (Before Tidus). FF10 and 12 both had you exploring large sections of the world, but it really wasn't analogous to the actual world map. For understandable reasons sure of course.

I'm guessing he might be referring to FFVIII, since that's the only previous FF game with a traditional "world map" and fairly realistic looking characters.

Yeah but that's only because the character design was realistic in that game. Everything was still out of proportion. It was the same as FF7 and FF9 just since the design was realistic it looked like that. The proportion is what makes the overworld map look goofy.

That's true, but FFVIII shows that it can work with realistic looking characters.... even if if does look kinda silly.
But then, who needs realism anyway?

Oh, that reminds me...the screenshots in the top of this image, Does anyone know if are they supposed to be the world map?

Looks like an early build of the world map.

No I really don't have a problem with the out of proportion nature, if anything it would feel like a cool throwback. I'm just curious how it will be done because I don't think they will do that.

I think Nomura is intentionally going for a mix of the old and the new here, seems like a positive thing so far.

Bring back the Hub World/World Map, RPG's seem to have forgotten them over the last few years (last one I can think of is Tales of Vesperia, although I admit I haven't played a whole lot of newer JRPG's)
