Think big, burly Kratos was always intended to be the main character for the God of War franchise? Not according to the series' art director Ken Feldman...

Kratos is now part of the muscle that is PlayStation, but the main God of War character wasn't always the broad and brutal figure that we all know today.

"I think it took us a year and a half to come up with Kratos" said series art director Ken Feldman in the latest issue of PlayStation: The Official Magazine. "That was the most difficult thing"

He then revealed the character that was first thought of for the role: "Everything has to be based around this character - the story, the weapons. The first guy we came up with was a little elf character, he was hysterical. His animations looked like Disney"

Probably would have been much more awesome.

Not as successful, mind, we all know most people only want steroid toting *bleep*tards, but it would have been awesome.

I wouldn't have had a second thought on playing GOW if they stuck with their original character.I would have just seen a stupid little elf and thought the game looked like a steaming pile of shit.

It has nothing to do with hime not being a muscebound freak that could eat steel.I mean I play Final Fantasy and their men are as manly as an infant

GOW is what made me like Hack & Slash games so I am thankfull for having played GOW.

He wasn't particularly stupid, just a little elf. And why would you automatically assume it was shit, hmm? Ratchet and Clank, at first glance, look silly. Sly Cooper, the idea of a raccoon dressed as a burglar, is in essence ridiculous. Mario is a fat italian plumber. Sonic is just a fast blue hedgehog. Each of them look silly at first glance. Doesn't stop them from being awesome.

Yes but those games are adventure/platform games which while I am not a big platform game fan I had some interest in them because of the Mario's and The Donky Kong Countries.H&S games before GOW I thought were crap plain and simple. Also I have VERY little interest in elfs (for the most part I hate the stupid things) so having an elf as the main character wouldn't have been appealing. So being a H&S game which I had 0 interest in at the time and a main charcter that I don't particularly like would have given me 0 interest to want to play.

As for the games you mentioned; I only really like the 2D Mario's.Sonics I have only played because of ROMS and being on compilation games.I don't play R&C games as I am a Jak player and while I aknowledge tha R&C games are very good, I just don't like them enough to play them.I have played a demo of the first and hired the second but nothing about the games ever pulled me in. I have only played a demo of the first Sly Racoon and own the 3rd which I never finished.

Whether you've played them and like them or not, doesn't stop the wide consensus from agreeing that they're awesome. J and D aren't exactly not silly either XD

So, let me get this straight; you're saying the only reason you became interested in GoW was because of Kratos and if it was anyone else you wouldn't have cared?

I'm assuming you saw a gameplay vid or heard great reviews and decided to check it out, right? So if the gameplay was still awesome and if people were still talking about the game being fantastic, you'd completely disregard it because of the main character?

I think you've just proven my original point

I read reviews of GOW but still wasn't sure if I wanted to play it.It did sound very good but it didn't change the fact that I hated H&S games back then.In the end I just decided to play it because it had nudity and at that time nudity wasn't something that wasn't as accepted here in Aus as it is now and if I think a game may be banned later down the track I buy it if I have even the slightest interest in it (which the review gave me interest in it).Yes I am werid like that

Anyway reviews no matter how good they are will make me buy a game.I don't play the MW and I NEVER plan on doing so.The fact is that if there's no interest for me then nothing in the world will get me playing it.So having no interest in H&S at the time and not liking elves would have given me no reason to play it even if they said it was the greatest game of all time.

So you only played it because of nudity? Such depravity from a gamer on the internet... how unexpected.

Well he may have had some reasoning... like if the game was going to be banned maybe he wanted a copy when it wasn't so... that he could sell it off at a ridiculous price if it did get banned!

          Yeah...

Yeah, I recall seeing something like that in the making of- vid for GoW1.

Well, thank God they finally decided on Kratos' current appearance.

Haha I would love to see this little elf and how it looks.

Still a good thing that they came up with how Kratos looks now.

You know what they should do, make the elf design into a costume and make it into a download content. I think it would be fantastic to dress up as that elf that they wanted to originally go for and kick major ass. Hell man, they can half ass it and just add pointy ears to Kratos and I'll be fine with it.

    I worded it wrong.

I didn't play it BECAUSE of nudity.I played it because I thought there was a chance of it being banned BECAUSE it had nudity. The chance of it being banned later on was what made me want to play it.Not the nudity itself.

Like I said, if I even a little interest in a game and I think it may be banned I will buy it.I tried to buy the Punisher on PS2 the day it was released because I thought it may be banned.Unfortunately it must have been banned a before it was release because the game was delayed and released edited. There was no nudity in that but I didn't want to miss out on half the gore of the executions.

I bought AvP on release day (today) because it was banned once and there is always the possibility that it will be banned again. If the thought of it being banned didn't cross my mind then I would have waited a about a month before I bought it.

It's the idea of something being limited that draws me to some things.I never wanted to play Manhunt until it was banned.Luckily only last year I think, I found a copy of the game even thought it's illegal to sell the game.

If I want nudity I can get a gf, go see some strippers or watch some porn

      Haha, get a gf

So you're saying if you played GoW, even after buying it, even after experiencing the great gameplay, you'd still hate it because of the main character being a little elf? Aesthetics mean that much more than gameplay?

        Gamesta100* Feb 18, 10
No just that I highly doubt I would have tried it in the first place had an Elf been the main character.

Oh and porn is cheaper than a gf

More like there's a more realistic chance of you getting porn

... but you still would have bought it because of the chance of banning, right?

If not than my original point about you only buying it because of muscle man Sotark is bang on.

    Gamesta100* Feb 18, 10
No because I wouldn't have any interest in it.No interest means no purchase even if it could be banned.

Also the game could have had some Final Fantasy style lead character and I would still have an interest in it.

So you would have completely ignored all the reviews, fans and the fact that almost every gamer loved it because you... dislike Elves?

I don't really understand how that can work, to be honest. I find Alex Mercer to be one of the most ill-thought out, detestable, cliche and inconsistent characters I've ever known, in and out of gaming, yet I still think the game itself is brilliant.

Meh, to each their own I guess. It just seems a little whimsical to me.

I wouldn't ignore reviews because I probably wouldn't bother reading them.Besides I don't usually give a damn about reviews and usually read them AFTER I have played a game just to see if the reviewer thought the same things as I.The reason one review of GOW made me interested in it is because it was in a magazine for which I nearly always agree with their reviews.Reviews for me are nearly always only there for me to see if there are any features that will break a game for me.Like nearly all missions being timed or a ton of one hit kill crap or endless streaming enemies.

I don't see what is SO hard to understand.Interest is what makes people want to try something.Without interest there's no point in wanting to play something.H&S which I had no interest in, a chracter that I would have had no interest in.Why bother thinking of playing a game that basically has nothing that interests you?

Maybe I posted my first post to sound like being an Elf would have been the ONLY thing I would have had no interest in but that would have just been PART of why I had no interest in it.I would hear H&S and immediatlely brush it off as crap.Throw in an unlikable character species to me and that makes it twice as uninteresting.

If you hate a game genre AND the main character then why bother taking an interest in it?

If you hate a game genre at all, then why bother taking an interest in it anyway?

Because of the review from the magazine you trusted, because you theorized it was going to be banned and because of how everyone said the game was brilliant; that's what you say convinced you to actually buy it in the end, isn't it?

What I can't wrap my head around is how the main character being an elf would nullify ALL of that above when you would check the game out with Kratos in it. You said you'd brush the game off as crap anyway because you heard it was Hack and Slash, but you still bought it didn't you? The fact is the breaking factor for you, the thing that trumps everything else in this particular scenario, is the character design.

          With Kratos, you buy.

With little elf, you don't buy.

Those are the only differences between interest and disinterest that you've stated. I just don't understand how you can consider the aesthetics of the main character to be so important that it makes or breaks a game.

Because I like to try new things. The game sounded good so I thought of playing it.I may hate something but if it does sound interesting I consider trying it out.I like the Greek mythology the game is all about.

I used to hate fighters apart from Killer Instinct.Yet I still tried out the demo of Tekken and Tekken ended up being my second favourite games series of all time.

I watched trailers of MGS because my friend thought it looked like an AWESOME game.I didn't like the look of it at all. Then a demo came out and I thought I would try it to see why he thought it looked so great.MGS ended up being my favourite game series of all time.

I am open minded and will likely end up trying things I initially hate.

Unless they involve a little elf, right?

That's what I don't understand, how that one factor can destroy your open minded-ness completely. Do you see where I'm coming from, now?
