According to a study conducted by Hope Cummings and Elizabeth Vandewater at the University of Texas at Austin, female gamers spend less time doing homework while male gamers spend less time reading, although in neither case is the time spent with their family affected.

The article also discusses the fact that the study does not seem to indicate that gamers are socially weakened, along with the idea that perhaps less time is spent doing homework purely because they need less time.

Boys who play video games on school days spend 30% less time reading, while girls spend 34% less time doing homework if they play video games, according to a US study.

But the authors add that video games do not appear to interfere significantly with time spent with family and friends.

This actually works out accurately for me; I read during boring battles and cut scenes, and have not once been caught doing homework. On the other hand, all of the gamers in the study played for significantly less time than I, or most people I know do. Pfh, lightweights.

It's interesting that there's a difference along the gender divide.

Well, I don't really do anything during my playing time on the games except actually play them, and I only read after I've gone to bed. I never do homework anyway so it doesn't really portray me in any sense.

Quite accurate believeable facts there in my opinion. Only thing I would argue is the fact that boys also do less homework because of video games, not books. I know boys that play video games but only know a few that actually read books...

I beg to differ. Bring in the WoW players to this study and we'll get a very different outcome...game that affects everything But I bet that the video games are actually being played with family and friends.
