A BBC article discussing the fact that the Wii has sold 270,974 units while the PS3 has only sold 41,628, barely a sixth of that amount. As well as discussing the Wii outselling the PS3 in Japan also includes quotes from Phil Harrison, PlayStation's head of worldwide studios.

Nintendo's Wii console outsold Sony's PlayStation 3 in Japan last month by six to one, says research.

Nintendo sold 270,974 Wii consoles last month while Sony sold 41,628 PS3s, according to Enterbrain, a Japanese publisher that tracks console sales.

I expected them to sell slightly more, but 6 to 1 is really good. Well done Nintendo! ^-^

Originally I thought people would be "scared of the different one" and I didn't think the Wii would sell much, but now that I think about the price, I can see it being right.

6 to 1 isn't defeat. It' god damn obliteration. I know the PS3 can do so much better than this.

Before release, the reverse of this stat seemed most likely, with most people not even giving the Wii a chance. I don't see sales dropping anytime soon, with the holidays coming up and real games finally coming to Wii. Should be good for the big N.

I didn't think the ratio would be THAT bit but I was expecting a fair bit of leighway between the two, just not 6 times more!

But yeah it's the pricing that is the biggest factor, and that the Wii's adverts on TV will appeal to audiences of gamers never previously into gaming. But yeah, go Wii!

Don't brew something up Seeker X, these days whenever I enter an article or thread on a forum such as this you get pety fanboy arguements. Don't let it spiral into anything. >_

The Wii is barely different from the GameCube, to be honest. It's more innovative and there's the internet/Virtual Console differences, but that's about it. Graphics-wise, for instance, is barely any different.

Still, it brings something new to the table. It's no surprise that it's beating the PS3...there's more consoles available and it's much cheaper.

Uh, it's just a question, and a damn good one at that too. I'd like to know why someone who's never even HAD a PS3 think it's inferior to the Wii.

Why, this very article shows! There's jack SHIT going for the PS3 right now. Resistance is not worth your precious $600 nor dual-platform titles.

Wow. 6 to 1? That's crazy. The Wii is still selling out as soon as it hits shelves too, haha. Nintendo must be happy.

Well personally, buying a Wii would be a waste of time of gamer time...simpley because the games out for it really aren't up to my standards.

I'd buy a 360...but the fees and overpriced downloadables feel like they're gonna screw deeper into my wallet faster than the PS3 would.

So...I'm sticking with my PS3 where online is free (and *bleep*ing awesome service to boot), and where a game can actually last more than 4 months. Yes, that means Resistance or maybe even MotorStorm...and No I don't regret ever spending money on it...IN FACT, I'm thinking of buying myself a 60 GB console for myself...so my brother can stay with the 20 GB.

Is this news story going to descend into another Wii vs. PS3 argument. *Looks at title*

    Never mind.

Everyone has personal tastes and reasons they bought their respective consoles, many of which most other people simply don't understand, not even mentioning the fact that most of us have had this argument in every other "Wii>PS3" or "PS3 is God's gift to gaming" post on this site and on the forums.

Ancient news and just another reason for Wii fans to bash the PS3. We would care about this information why?

    Rinkydink Jul 3, 07
PS3 fans would care if it was the other way round.

But about the article, nice news for Nintendo indeed. Hopefully the Wii will continue to sell at such an exceptional rate and continue to look like a now dominant figure in the gaming industry.

What makes you think I'm a PS3 fan (If that's what you're assuming)? I wouldn't care even if it were the other way around. Such as the PS3 outselling Wii and 360 in Australia. Though I prefer the PS3 over my 360 and Wii, I honestly can't say that I give a rat's ass about sells.

I don't really care that mcuh however I am happy about this. The gamecube went so bad last time that it was impossible for me to find any games out where I am, not that I bought one anyway but since the wii is doing so well there are more wii games around the place. If the wii wins I will be surprised but I don't care that much.

If you compare the the prices the the Wii is only outselling the PS3 by about 3 to 1

    Good for Nintendo!
They've made a great console at a cheap price with games that appeal to general audiences, so it's no surprise that it's doing so well. Kudos to them, I say!

    Final Blade Jul 4, 07
LOL this isn't news since we had the 3 to 1 article awhile back. but this is sales now, if they compared the wii to ps3 in 7 months it will be the other way around, simply put games.

Give the PS3 some time for some of it's quality titles to come out(GTA, Final Fantasy, MGS). then it'll bring in more sales...

    Cruxis Mana Jul 4, 07
Once all the good good games start coming out sales will increase, but I doubt that sales of the PS3 will ever beat the sales of the Wii - as the Wii appeals to a larger audience ^^

The DS is also slaughtering the PSP

      Final Blade Jul 4, 07
Trust me it will take over at one point. I say give it one year to make it a 6 to 1 ps3 to wii lol.

    Storm Jul 4, 07
The DS is slaughtering the PSP, no doubt...but now Nintendo actually has handheld competition. The Gamegear and all those others in the past couldn't compare to the wonderful Gameboy. Now it's a different story, though. The PSP has gotten quite a few hits, and more on the way.

Anyways, this isn't about the handheld war

Let's be clear here - this seems to be solid proof that the general public are only prepared to pay so much for a console. Sony were naive to think that a console with a ludicrous price-tag of £400+ would sell just because it had the 'Playstation' tag slapped on it.

Make no mistake, the DS can't hold a candle to the PSP with some games.

Besides, it's the same issue, people don't wanna pay that much. I can buy 3 Wiis for my family if I wanted to, but I doubt my parents would ever use it, and my bro would prefer the PS3 just because it has Vegas. Also...quality in games sometimes aren't to par with what I play on the PS3 as well.

A nice example of quality is like comparing Tony Hawk's Project 8 to Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam, more bang for your buck.

    bbb7002004* Jul 4, 07
That is your personal opinion, plenty of people see it the exact opposite way. Each system has games and abilities that makes it unique and appealing to people, so anyone's argument about a specific console having better quality games is moot. Personally, I have yet to see a game on PSP that I think I would even remotely enjoy, yet can't wait for several DS titles coming out, hence why I bought a DS instead of a PSP. The same can be said about the consoles.

      Seeker X Jul 4, 07
Granted, but even though, two games of the same series I just mentioned serves as a nice example of quality. Skating fans might wanna stick with Tony Hawk's Project 8 rather than Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam. Or maybe even Ghost Squad going up against Time Crisis 4?

The PSP has the same problem with sales, it's too expensive for it's own good. But then again, PSP is known for having console sized games for a nice experience when you're on a bus ride and whatnot.

Oh im sorry if 169 is expensive, how low do you want it. $100 i got mine off ebay for 89 cause i felt like it.

The reason the Wii is outselling the PS3 6:1 is because it's cheap and fun for casual kid gamers. It's basically a Gamecube with a new controller. Don't get me wrong, Nintendo put something new into the gaming world that's innovative and I'm sure it can go a long way, but it just simply doesn't beat the PS3.

I'm sure if the PS3 was cheap and the Wii was expensive, it would be the other way around. Simply put, the PS3 is a technological marvel with new-age graphics, amazing gameplay and groundbreaking titles that are for serious gamers while the Wii is a Gamecube with a fancy new controller for kids. Of course the Wii is outselling, simply put, because there are less kids interested in serious games and even less parents willing to shell out the cash.

I'm not saying the PS3 is better, I'm saying this article sucks balls because you JUST CAN'T COMPARE THE TWO SYSTEMS.

I wonder what those people who said the Wii would fail miserably are thinking when they see this.

Oh, and if I buy a Wii, which I want to badly, it wont be because of the price, it will be because of the controller and how much fun it makes the games.
