Stop before you jump the gun thinking this is old news, there's some more information behind the story, with new pictures! As you can see, there was serious planning into Peace Walker being marketed as MGS5. Even more so with the famous Kojima "Rain" Website, which contained cryptic messages involving flashes of characters and numbers or letters. Surely enough, this cements the notion that Peace Walker is the true Prequel to Guns of the Patriots, and that Kojima is 100% devoted to this game, unlike the spin-off title Rising; which can now be confidently passed off as not a direct sequel.

According to Konami spokesperson Jirou Oishi, Peace Walker was named Metal Gear Solid 5 during the planning stages. These are concept logos for the game.

I haven't been keeping up with Peace Walker so much, but I will pick it up when it's released without even thinking twice. It will be my second UMD to own, after Portable Ops.

At this point the Metal Gear franchise is diverging into a new entity, while Peacewalker contributes to the 'classic' entity. This is a great move as it allows Metal Gear to expand and benefit from a switch up of gameplay designs that were otherwise very limited in the Solid series. That isn't to say that the new divergence should not be labeled a 'true sequel' in terms of additions to the universe, MG timeline, but what I see Peacewalker as is a sequel to the spirit of the original series. Resident Evil did the same thing when they altered the camera angle and allowed third person aiming/control, while still making games that used the fixed camera system. It made for very different games that were bound by the same universe (or at least tried to - RE5 kinda let the firecracker explode in its own hands).

I do think it's a shame that the final word on the Solid series is being restricted to the PSP. I think that much could have been edited out of the wacky and nonsensical MGS4 that could have covered a majority of what needed to be covered, and then the PSP release could elaborate further.

It's been the final word on the Metal Gear Solid series since MGS2 man. MGS will never die as long as Kojima is alive.

I think if they left loose ends in MGS4 and picked them up in a portable version, some people might have been annoyed that they have to buy another console (albeit a portable one) to get the full story.
